A Message to Mark Carney: Shut Down the Golden Shield Scheme Now
Fellow Canadians, this is an all-hands-on-deck moment.
The Liberal government has informed the United States that it has resolved its internal issues regarding the signing of Donald Trump’s “Golden Shield” missile initiative.
This message was delivered on July 15 in Colorado, when Defence Minister David McGuinty told U.S. General Gregory Guillot, his American counterpart, that Carney had “removed all restrictions on air and missile defence of Canada.”
This is way bigger than Carney caving on the Digital Sales Tax. Or his musings about cancelling the Online News Act that has pissed off Facebook. Or even dialling back the counter tariffs imposed by former Prime Minister Trudeau.
This move sends the ultimate signal of weakness and represents a serious repudiation of Canada’s longstanding position on airborne missile defence.
This cannot be allowed to stand.
How We Got Here
In May, as Donald Trump was escalating his threats against our nation, the gangster from Mar-a-Lago announced his bonkers plan to build a "golden dome" missile defence system to protect Americans from rogue enemies.
To make it work, it required getting command of Canadian airspace; no doubt that the incoming missiles fell on Canadian soil.
The scheme required filling our skies with drones, satellites and missiles. Imagine that. Low-level satellites flying over our towns and cities, providing intel to a government that says we don't have the right to exist.
And in classic Trump fashion, he bragged that Canadians would be forced to pay $70 billion for the privilege, just like the people of Mexico paying for the wall.
Around the same time, Trump boasted about how we would soon beg to be the new 51st state. Or as right-wing MAGA influencer Ben Shapiro declared, reduce us to a mere territory lacking even the right to vote in American elections.
There was a lot of talk as to whether Canada would be bullied into such a scheme. Prime Minister Carney was circumspect. But that seemed okay. He had just been elected, having run on a promise of “Elbows Up” and fighting for Canada.
Carney was our wartime Prime Minister. The fact that he was playing his cards close to his chest meant he had a plan.
Right?
But now we know what the plan looks like: moving ahead with Trump's scheme.
A Reverse in Principle
This isn't a minor policy change. It represents a significant repudiation of Canada's long-standing position on airborne missile defence.
In the 1980s, Canada refused to join Ronald Reagan's Star Wars plan. In 2005, Prime Minister Paul Martin turned his back on an effort by President George W. Bush to establish a North American missile defence shield.
We can only imagine the immense pressure that was on Canadian leaders in those times. Reagan was a militant Cold Warrior obsessed with nuclear defence. But Canada stood up to him.
When Bush strong-armed us, the United States had just suffered a traumatic attack on American soil.
Again, Canada held its ground.
But Defence Minister McGuinty claims that this time, the threat is more urgent:
"The threat environment has drastically changed, and Canada needs to be prepared. By removing outdated restrictions on our air and missile defence policies, Canada is taking another necessary step to strengthen the safety and security of Canadians and the sovereignty of Canada."
I agree with McGuinty that the threat environment has drastically changed, but what threat is he concerned about?
Is it from rogue powers like Vladimir Putin or Kim Jong-Un, who have been feted and complimented by Donald Trump?
Or is the threat from a gangster shakedown of the Mafia state in Washington?
Stop by any Tim Horton's, Mr. McGuinty, and ordinary Canadians will give you the correct answer.
The Real Threat
The threat we are facing from the United States isn't subtle.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claims that the northern border (that's us) poses a serious threat to American safety. FBI Director Kash Patel has falsely claimed that Canada is responsible for hundreds of terrorists flooding over the border.
Aggressive actions by the U.S. Coast Guard suggest that the United States is trying to intimidate us.
Trump continues to attack our sovereignty — ramping up economic pressure and he hasn't backed down from claims that he can arbitrarily move the border. Just five months ago, MAGA was suggesting that Canada be kicked out of NORAD.
If Trump is worried about incoming missiles, he could be talking about working with his Canadian allies on NORAD defence capabilities. This scheme is something altogether different.
This is a scheme being imposed on us.
McGuinty's counterpart for negotiations is Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth. His pastor, Doug Wilson, just gave a shocking interview to CNN where he declared his opposition to women having the right to vote, opposition to gay rights and abortion and a biblical defence of slavery.
If McGuinty wants to consider what an elevated "threat environment" looks like, he can simply look across the table at Hegseth.
This is about turning our nation into a vassal state.
Since I began speaking out on this issue, I have received blowback from Carney supporters telling me not to be “divisive.” One accused me of throwing a tantrum. Others suggested I should just trust the Prime Minister — he’s a smart man, smarter than I am, they say — and he’s only playing with Trump.
But here's the problem with that thinking.
Does anyone really believe that going along with such a protection racket (even verbally) will do anything to deter aggression? It won’t. It will only embolden MAGA to go further.
Never mind that all manner of military experts have seriously questioned the notion of shooting ICBMs out of the air as a dangerous scheme. A money pit that could take decades to get right.
But whether this money pit ever became a reality isn't the point. In the meantime, it would extend U.S. surveillance over our land. Surveillance by a regime that has stated that they don't believe we have a right to exist.
Even pretending to turn our skies over to MAGA is a betrayal of our nation.
Where This Leaves Us
Prime Minister Carney came into office with enormous goodwill and little opposition.
The progressive left voted in great numbers for Carney because we trusted his promise to fight hard for Canada. It decimated the New Democrats, which means there will be no progressive oversight in any committee review of military spending or negotiations.
At the same time, Carney will be pressed by the hard-right MAGA machine of Pierre Poilievre. Whatever Carney agrees to in Parliament, the Conservatives will say that it is not enough.
That's not a good balance.
And so it falls to ordinary Canadians to stand up and keep this ship going in the right direction.
I agree with the Prime Minister that we must increase our military spending. But that means recognizing the real threat — to our waterways, our harbours, to our border.
Instead of giving billions to Trump's satellite scheme, we should establish drone factories and mobile defence systems. And on the international front, we should increase production of artillery shells and other supplies to help Ukraine.
We are on the front line against Trump.
They are on the front line against both Putin and Trump.
Since the threat to our nation began, Canadians have shown an unprecedented level of solidarity. The PM has been given a strong mandate because Canadians are determined to hold the line.
He will seriously undermine this support if he thinks he can placate Trump on something as fundamental as the sovereignty of Canadian airspace.
The blowback will be intense.
My advice to the Prime Minister: Not a single dime, Mark. Not a single dime. You asked for a mandate to defend us with your Elbows Up. We gave you that. But do not think you can placate the gangster.
My message to my fellow Canadians: Let's shut this idiocy down before it gains any more traction. The PM needs to hear from you.
I urge you to use your voice. Tell him that he does not have a mandate to go along with Trump's missile control of our skies.

As a reminder, the US got Trump because people thought he didn't mean what he said. When he says he wants to take over Canada, believe him. There should be no strategy in which an ounce of Canadian sovereignty is given up.
Im on it. The Americans are going to need to change their authoritarian government by whatever means necessary, and we want no part of trump’s controlling bs. And NO to the F-35’s. Buy elsewhere.
