In 2017 I said that the United States under Trump reminded me of 1933 Germany. In 2025 the United States under Trump reminds me of 1939 Germany. I do not believe this is an exaggeration. And I do not believe it is an exaggeration to say that these people are Nazis. The best time to stop them was in November 2024. The next best time to stop them is NOW.

I have been reading reports about the new border bill that has been introduced. It is said to be an effort to placate the Trump administration's bogus concerns about its border with Canada, which are an obvious red herring, and it has implications for your ministry that are deeply concerning.
Efforts to curry favour with Trump and his minions are pointless and dangerous, as their ongoing defiant hostility toward Canada attests. Further, the current actions of that administration toward its own citizens are a humanitarian crisis which will require moral clarity in our national government's response.
There will be an increasing demand for immigrant and refugee status from people in the USA who have pressing and legitimate concerns for their safety, even for their survival. There will also be an increased interest on the part of international students who no longer see American universities as a sensible option and who wish to come and study in our country. I am sympathetic to the short-term pressures represented by all this, but I am also clear that a flexible and compassionate reaction is morally required and will have manageable and positive long-term outcomes.
I live in British Columbia. I have several friends who own vacation homes across the border in Washington state. I have heard anecdotes from them that (a) if you come to the border without a cell phone, they will deny you entry into the US; (b) if you bring a burner phone, they will deny you entry and ban you for 10 years; (c) if you bring your actual cell phone, they will arbitrarily go through everything on your phone and ask you your political views. One woman asked "What's this all about? is it because of trump?". She was denied entry and banned for 10 years. It's appalling. I will not go anywhere near the US, ever again.
Many of the questions US border security asks are designed to identify a person's loyalty to Trump. That, in itself, should be a red flag to the American people. Before Trump version 2, some questions were designed to filter out threats to the USA. Months ago, I explained to California Governor Newsom why I can't visit his state. I would have to lie to get in by swearing some version of loyalty to Trump. But I won't lie to get into the USA. Therefore it wouldn't be possible for me to visit. At the time Governor Newsom was surprised by this. He hadn't been made aware that some Canadians were being screened at the border. The USA probably already has a list of Canadians unsympathetic to Trump--just by surveying social media. I am sure I am already on a list.
Actually, it's been a pariah state for decades. My wife is reading a book by Stephen Kinzer entitled "Overthrow: America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq". She says it does a good job of showing how anti-communist hysteria and religious zealotry helped create the American military industrial complex.

Hi there, Canadian here. The main driver behind Canadians not wanting to go to the US was and is the continued threat of annexation. The lack of response (and continued lack of response) from Americans to that threat is a massive slap in the face to every Canadian that saw themselves as a determined friend to America and Americans. Now though? Most Canadians wouldn't even bother thinking about entertaining American friendship let alone visiting the States. The tariffs and threat from ICE are just added reasons for not going. Until we hear Americans acknowledging the annexation threat, Canadians will not be returning to South
As an american (small A for a reason) whose grandparents on both sides were French Canadian, I am very distressed that Ian feels that there is a lack of response regarding the threats of annexation by a wanna-be dictator and his collection of miscreants. Many, many of us here in the states are angered for our neighbors in Canada and are also out protesting this insane idea. I consistently wear my "Gloves Off" and "Canada is Not for Sale" shirts everywhere to get that important message out. We are still your friends and await the day when the dark cloud of fascism finally disintegrates. Don't sell us short, please. I often say that the US occupies my heart, but my soul belongs to Canada. 🍁💖

It's important to remember how close ALL of us are to where Americans find themselves today. Wasn't Pierre ahead in the polls - by a significant margin - until the Canadians got a good look at the trump regime? If we lose our shared friendship with sweeping generalizations, then we've all lost everything.

I currently live in AZ. We were seemingly on our way to becoming a dark purple until the last election. It's sliding backwards to red.
