No one in the American media is brave enough to question the validity of a completely computerised American election count.

Perhaps a well-known Canadian can do it. There is the new film about Musk as context. Just look at Pennsylvania’s election by turnout in precincts and compare to Canada’s, which you can find on the @ElectionTruthAlliance website. Trump won only in districts with greater than 75% turnout. Where in America do you get greater than 75% turnout in such massive numbers such that it turns an election?

"But he also warns about the risk of sharing an unguarded border with an increasingly unstable and disintegrating world empire.": Um, yeah. That's why I keep asking here about that "300,000 person citizens' army" announced last December*. That needs to happen, pronto. Mr. Angus (in case he's reading), an update would be welcome. I do pay some attention to the CBC and other news outlets, but I haven't noticed anything about the matter recently.

I'm an American living in Canada since 2018 after about half a century in the USA. I don't expect anything most people would call a civil war there. (To be sure, one could call episodes such as the ICE occupation of Minneapolis "civil warfare", but I don't think that's the best term for them.) Rather, I expect consolidation of the fascist takeover. In Germany during the early 1930s, there was sporadic violence** but not a civil war, because much as in the USA at present, opponents of fascism were numerous but disorganized, irresolute, and otherwise weak.

**For example, in his book "The Nazi seizure of power", William Allen wrote that by 1932, "Political violence was becoming a permanent institution ... between July 1 and July 20, there were 461 political riots in Prussia in which eighty-two people were killed and over 400 seriously injured."

No empire has lasted forever. Canada has endured (as has the world) the US arrogance for generations… really since they dropped the bomb on Japan. Hence their reason not to allow other countries to have a nuke because they fear retribution. If they were not cowardly self serving entitled bullies, they would have less to worry about. Their leaders and media for generations have told them they are the greatest, biggest, smartest, strongest, fearless nation who deserve to protect their own interests no matter what the cost to other nations… “what is yours is mine”

Excellent interview Charlie. Thank you.

I think until we stop the bleeding whereby Canadian firms sell out to American interests because they make more money that way, we will end up in the same place - with our whole economy in the hands of Americans.

Marche's "Civil War" is outstanding. I have read it at least three times...

It’s that 5000 or so MILES of undefended border that worries me.

Michael's avatar

It is also 5000 miles of border that the US would have to defend from insurgents and drones. Saw that Canada is looking to acquire domestic production of strike drones with a range of over 500 Km. The article was focused north towards Russia, but you have to ask what is within range if you reversed the direction of attack or should I say defense.

Trumpedo can't fix a freaking pool. And Hegseth is busy overseeing the sperm counts of military personnel. Take a breath.

Adolf Hitler and his lackeys were widely and rightly considered ridiculous; they were conspicuously not only vicious but stupid and inept. On that and other topics, William Shirer's memoir "The nightmare years" makes horribly instructive reading. For example:

"Such were the men [Goebbels, Göring, Hess, Himmler, Ribbentrop, etc., ad nauseam] around Hitler in those first years of the Third Reich. In a normal, civilized society, they surely would have stood out as a grotesque assortment of misfits." (p. 205)

Of Himmler, Shirer says:

"He struck me as too insignificant, too mediocre, to succeed for long as such a key man in this repressive regime ... But in this weird Nazi world there were a number of men of little competence and intelligence and no character - veritable thugs - who, to one's astonishment, would be given posts of key importance, with power over the life and death of millions." (p. 194)

Of Ribbentrop, he says:

"Ribbentrop was an ignoramus. Early in my observation of him I sized him up as incompetent and lazy, vain as a peacock, arrogant and without humor ... Why then, we would ask, did Hitler choose him? Only because, we concluded, Ribbentrop was doggedly loyal to the Leader and never crossed him or even questioned him ... Hitler took to him, as he did to so many mediocrities." (pp. 196-197)

And so on.

It's a potentially fatal mistake not to recognize that contemptible people can be extremely dangerous.

Excellent conversation as always.

One line that nailed Trump: “Trump is hard core pornography”

That is the truth, and MAGA seems to find it very satisfying.

It’s also true that his age and mental/emotional/physical deterioration will make that difficult to sustain.

That’s when the scary stuff can happen - when he knows he can’t carry it off anymore.

The words he’s saying about Iran just now, the failure to overcome Iran, the renewed crazy threats, say to me, “Look Out”, a nuclear weapon may be what he sees as the only option, assuming he has made a deal with Putin that, in exchange for US not helping Ukraine, Putin will not react on behalf of Iran.

However, I have also heard that Iran may be able to join and get the support of BRICS.

Scary stuff ahead.

Re Canada, I’m glad Carney walked away - but even if there is some trade agreement eventually with the US, what measures can be taken to ensure it isn’t broken or twisted a short time later?

Remember the Gordie Howe bridge, and Carney’s warning that Trump often signs deals in pencil.

I was raised in the USA by the kind of people who now support Cheetolini en masse: bigots and ignoramuses (per Clarence Darrow a century ago). They grumbled incessantly about "RINOs" (Republicans In Name Only) who weren't fully committed to re-establishing unchallenged white, male, and christianist supremacy. They liked Ronald Reagan better than most, but even he still dealt mostly in "dog whistles" and halfway measures, when what they craved was bullhorns and "ethnic cleansing". Donald Trump is pretty much the president they really wanted.

2026 aug 25 - what reducedamerican trad e will look like. (Spoiler—flat gdp one year with resumed 2-3% afterwards)

2025 July 29- How do we fight back. (Spoiler with a much larger and more educated population than Afghanistan….and I would say more integrated) how’s a 20-30 year war of sabotage sound?

I am mapping routes with Google Vr Maps around Vancouver to and from the mountains. Looking up old tunnels. One goes under the city and has a vent shaft in the middle leading up to a regular urban form. When I go to the movies an underground parking lot gets my insurgency ideas going. Before I would just wonder what my popcorn topping was going to be. I live near a emergency communication center with big antennas and such, I wonder if it would be boomed if the USA went crazier on us all.

One positive note for Canada and the United States is that while Hitler and Stalin imprisoned and killed anyone who opposed them, Trump has so far not done that. The federal civil servants, academics, scientists, etc who lost their jobs to DOGE and cuts by the Trump administration (as well as their families) are highly motivated to organize, vote and resist.

Linda Sawka's avatar

He may not have imprisoned those who oppose him YET, but he has imprisoned many people that he sees as "other". He's testing the waters. With no opposition to Alligator Alcatraz and mass deportations and killings (remember blowing up fishing vessels in the Caribbean, or ICE murders?) with no opposition, I fear he is just getting started. As well, his private army of ICE has already received permission to kill any who oppose Trump. These midterms could prove to be a bloodbath.

Very good point, Linda. I had not looked at the future. I stand corrected - he has NOT YET eliminated those who oppose him.

Charlie's interview talked about Canada ragging the puck in this trade war. No one did it better than Bobby Orr who stood up to the bullies in the corners and never walked away from a fight. He led Canada to victory in the 1976 Canada Cup tournament and won the MVP award playing on one good leg while his other leg had severe chronic knee damage. Bobby's resilience is what we need to fight our bullies and never stand down!
