What would you sell out your nation for? It is a question I never dreamed would have to be asked in Canada. But we have witnessed a dismal parade of grifters trying to curry favour with the gangster regime in Washington. Trump is a president who wants to destroy our nation and make us a vassal state. So far, the ones stepping up to the traitor mound seem to be willing to sell our birthright pretty cheap.
I need to put my cards on the table. I get pretty emotional when I think of Canada. This isn't something theoretical or sentimental. It is rooted in the experiences I gained travelling this country and getting to know its people.
I left home at 18, travelling in a van with musicians. I fell in love with the immense beauty of this vast land. I cherish the incredibly warm welcome I have received in communities big and small. From the wilds of the Yukon to the Atlantic shores, I have met people who are so perfectly Canadian – in their tolerance, open-mindedness and love of fun. And nowhere have I enjoyed more than the times I have spent in Alberta.
My trust in our national ability to stand up to Trump is solid. But we do need to deconstruct the arguments of the punters who would sell our nation.
Check out David Staples's recent opinion piece in the Edmonton Journal. His reasons for destroying our nation seem like pretty thin gruel. First, he puts it down to the fact that his fellow Canadians elected Justin Trudeau. I lived for eight dark years under Stephen Harper, and I hated his government. There wasn't a person I knew who suggested that was a reason to walk away from our nation. It was a reason to get out and vote.
Mr. Staples, however, says his feelings for Canada are "muted" as he contemplates the offer of joining a foreign nation run by a convicted felon and sexual predator. This sell-out of our country seems to have something to do with a talk Trudeau had on Quebec television back in 2010. Fifteen years later, Staples is still pissed that Trudeau talked about his love for Quebec.
But seriously, dude, is that a reason to destroy 158 years of independence?
Toward the end of his article, Staples gets to the point. It's all about "Liberal elites… demonizing oil and gas."
Never mind that those Liberal elites gave $34 billion in taxpayers' money to build a pipeline so record-making companies could shift unrefined bitumen to the United States. Or that under this "Liberal elitist" government, Canada's oil and gas has reached unprecedented levels. Or the fact that our planet is burning to the absolute indifference of the oil CEOs in Calgary.
Is Staples seriously banking on the fact that, by breaking up Canada and joining a nation where millions are being forcibly deported and many more denied basic health care, the oil giants in Alberta will somehow be able to double oil production?
I appreciated the article. It reminds me that those who sell out their birthright never seem to do it with high-minded ideals or even a half-decent payoff.
Robbie Burns called them a dismal "parcel of rogues in a nation."
I would, or I had seen the day
That treason thus could sell us ...
We were bought and sold for English gold:
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
In Robbie's day, the rogues sold out Scotland for English gold. These rogues would do it to win Donald's praise or because Big Oil isn't making enough profits.
Pretty lame stuff.
But hey, a Quisling is gonna be a Quisling.
As for the rest of Canada, I have rock-solid faith. We are proud, loyal, and fearsome when it comes to defending democracy. Canadians will not fall for this attempt to divide us. We will stand up for our nation.
As a freedom-loving American who despises the current fascism in full display in my beloved homeland, I am so grateful to you, Mr Angus, for loudly challenging the bullies here. I am appalled at the current felonious occupier's harrassment of our friends. Despite what corporate media and all the propaganda machines want people to believe, the baby sociopathic tyrant most certainly did NOT have a landslide win (1.7% is hardly a landslide) and did not receive a "mandate" from the American people. While I am flummoxed that anyone at all would vote for him, the resistance continues to grow, and we are in the fight of our lives here. Our allies who are holding the line as Canada and Mexico are doing are simply invaluable to us.
Thank you, Canada. 💙💙
Bravo, Charlie! Thank you for highlighting the stupidity and the lies! I re-read an old article about Harper being considered the worst PM ever when he finally got voted out. It made me wonder if Canada wasn't a testing ground for the MAGAts. It sure read like it. Tyrannical leadership, Robocalls, Omnibus bill, gagging scientists, taxpayer-paid political ads, selling away mineral rights to China in closed room dealings, the (un)fair elections act, and on and on the article went. All seemed to have one goal, destabilize Canada and put power and money in the hands of himself and his cronies. Sound familiar? Santayana said it best, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Thanks for keeping these topics relevant and current! I wish you were running for PM. I'd give you my vote! 😊
