In a Victoria BC college…Randy Garrison was teaching a Civics class in the early 90’s and we learned of this trend as it was unfolding…yet we were mere spectators of the “Powers that Be” in our unfolding democracy and new world order indeed.
Well, the first thing that stands out is the parallels between Regan and Trump. They both had dementia while in office.
Regan died of Alzheimer's. Shortly after leaving office, Nancy Regan found him wondering around the house with a gold fish in his hand from their aquarium asking what is this, and where does it really belong? Apparently, he thought it was some sort of household object that fell from somewhere into this strange tank of water. He wanted to put it back on its shelf.
Ronald Reagan's Staff Quizzed Him After Mental Decline Concerns, Book Says
Another episode that happened was Trump was getting ready to do a speech at some sort of public forum when he was president. They were doing an open mic test:
Reagan jokes about Russia while doing a sound test. The joke led to a brief red alert
And, this Milton Friedman guy who won a Nobel prize in economic sciences on replacing Keynesianism with monetarism in the mid 1970s.
Now, this is NOT the same Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) which talks about government funding as an issuer of currency instead of an end user. That is something different and has only been developed recently. What Friedman talks about is more like what Charlie describes.
What IS interesting is Friedman's project was headquartered in the University of Chicago - the very same place where NORC-AP Votecast runs from, and which had suppressed the release of raw exit poll data taken on November 5 2024 to the public until AFTER Trumps inauguration. Normally, the raw files are released within a few days of an election.
Thank you for this very interesting account of what killed our economy. Back in the 80's we were busy raising children and trying to purchase our first house. We did purchase that house with two mortgages and were lucky enough to get a low interest rate of 12% for five years. Our neighbours were not so lucky. Their rates of interest on their mortgages went from 17% to 22%.
My dad was a steel worker in small town Ontario. The plant that had been there for as long as I can remember was shut down and all those folks lost their jobs. Fortunately dad was able to find employment fairly quickly because of his expertise in a number of areas.
I hope there is a chapter in your book or pod cast about the harm Brian Mulroney did to the Canadian economy. He was right up there with his buddy Reagan and Maggie Thatcher. Will we ever recover from this? I don't know. I think we are still feeling the affects of it now but it is much worse with gig economy being an overarching issue.
I am looking forward to purchasing your book Charlie. Keep up the good work. your are one of my political heroes.
Let us not forget that this was not just an American phenomenon. Yes, the USA had Ronald Reagan who was followed by George H.W. Bush, both right-wing Republicans, but other countries had their right-wing leaders. In Great Britain Margaret Thatcher was creating her havoc and in Canada we had Brian Mulroney, our second worst Prime Minister.
Thank you. Enjoyed every minute of it!

Jeez, just say it out loud, why doncha?

I love the podcast and the history. I find the music to be very distracting though.

Second in "worseness" only to Stephen Harper. But compared to Harper, Mulroney was a cross between Mother Teresa and a redder-then-red communist.
