I thought of your remarks about late stage capitalism cannibalising itself.
AI is the ultimate case of speculative capital feeding speculative capital vs investment in production.
And who ultimately pays? The working class which still simply means anyone who doesn’t own the means of production. All of us will and are paying through advancing debt loads and fewer real jobs tied to production and economies linked to an equally fake GDP. And that is Smith's big plan: AI data centres run on nuclear energy. Help.
It might be worth attending one of Gil's workers agenda meetings. Still think he needs to talk Peoples Agenda .
We simply must stop electing idiots. They’re killing us, and profiting from it. Fully funding pre and post secondary education and ALL public services is CRITICAL. Idiots elect idiots.
I am not optimistic about Carney. I just know that he sees the ley lines. And there is more maneuvering to come. He knows that there will be no pipeline but he's shifted the entire responsibility for it onto Smith's sloping shoulders. Hilarious!
Not pleased about the CER rollback and therein lies the baubles she is really after. Four approved AI data centres and no restrictions on our grid that can barely support us as is.
I hope that the NDP will continue to be bold like Mamdani AOC, Bernie and a few others. What have they got lose? Just our future.
Agreed. This is heinous. This is insane. This is criminal. Thank you, again Charlie, for exposing this madness. Stay Safe. Stay Protected. Elbows Up. 🇨🇦
The country I live in is ruled by people who are not only cruel, they are imbeciles of the highest order. It is time for Drumpf to call back his old theatrics and tell the whole reckless incompetent administration You’re Fired!! Fat chance I know. God help us.
Time to do some deep thinking about what has got your country into such a mess.....mean spirits and blame gamers aside........there has to be some genuine sense of grievance in the MAGA movement to make so many choose such know it all know nothings......not once, but twice.
I agree completely. I suspect years of disenfranchment and shaming is part of it. So much anger. Mixed with legal guns, a toxic combo. Few avenues to climb out of poverty and the dead end jobs. Capitalism with few of the softening edges. Power hungry corporate backed politicians preying on grievances and turning them into incendiary rages. No leadership for compromise and true nation building. That’s part of what would be found. Signed, a miserable Canadian in America.
Yes. The fruits of neoliberal deregulated global capitalism are rotten for the most part....and they poison body, mind and spirit. Sitting in Alberta, I see the discrepancies. We have produced a lot of wealth.......but not for all, or most of the people. We do like to think well of ourselves......but in our personal lives, we're often isolated, estranged from family or financially desperate, with no idea of how to change things for the better. Politically, we're naive or reactive.......in Alberta, right wingers can't even understand how equalization works, let alone comprehend why its a good program.
And we're angry........likely primarily because at some level we know we've been duped....conned into believing wealth creation meant we'd all live as if there were half a dozen planets to resource for our pleasures.
It might just be time to try something different. Democratic socialism comes to mind....the hopefulness of those young people in New York comes to mind. But those of us still clinging on to a good job, or a paid for home are afraid of the radical concept of 'sharing'.............it likely means we'd have to 'give' something.
The result is, we're caught between rapacious capitalism and limiting socialism.....with chain saw wielding drug addicts like Musk on one side.......and our own homeless drug addicted children on the other.
BUT ANGER SOLVES NOTHING. Somehow, we need to get past our 'useless and pointless information" (Dylan) and find ways to act together. A culture of Caregiving and care teaching is possible....I read recently that the care culture accounts for 80% of our gdp.....but we'd have to learn to work together and set aside our personal grievances.
And it seems just now, that is beyond most of us. Even many political allies can't tend to the forest for the trees still blinding their vision.
Stay strong........I can imagine what you're living through. I thank the goddess every day I refused that proposal and came home to Canada as a young woman.
Currently awaiting my MAID intake as a first responder in NS who WCB left to rot with my disabilities. It’s Kafkaesque but it is the PC way to handle these corruption situations.
I get a lot of messages from healthcare workers in the US considering moving here due to our healthcare but when I explain what happens when injured, healthcare turns into healthbusiness, no better than the US… and worse if WCB is involved.
Healtcare is no longer care, it’s business. If you can pay to play you have nothing to worry about.
Essential as this information is....and clear as it makes the case for the war against medical research and any form of publicly supported health, we should see these developments in the wider context of something Marx told us about capitalism.
Now I realize that virulent free marketeers may stop reading at the mention of this 19th C intellectual. Still, his comments on late stage Capitalism are likely on the money....literally.
Here's a precis: Capitalism's Achilles heel is it needs constant new markets....it must grow, as we all should know by now. It's the panacea for all our troubles, yes?? We'll just grow our way out of the current messes we've created, yes??
Trouble is, in late stage Capitalism new markets are hard to find. So Capitalism does what any windigo would do.......it cannibalizes its own.
Ergo: The war on Vaccines and medical research needs to be seen as part of a late capitalist strategy......at least in part. Where are the billionaires to turn to become trillionaires, unless they can monopolize and resource things that are now public??
That's UNIVERSAL MEDICAL CARE, my fellow Canadian resisters. That's UNIVERSAL PUBLIC EDUCATION. That's likely also our pubic roads, utilities and governance infrastructure. Kennedy's relatives call him a predator. That is likely accurate .
Vaccine scepticism and quack cures (privately produced) is just the strategy. We give the MAGA leaders too much credit when we imagine they're stupid....or ignorant. They may be those things.......but at the core, they're CAPITALISTS. Keep believing in the private market's ability to do good public works better than the public.....and the return to Capitalist feudalism is guaranteed.
The military...secret police included.....is a great job creator. We can watch it do its civic duty in that failed republic to the south of us.......Kennedy being just one turn of the climate killing, democracy killing screws. We're falling for it as well......imagining a zombie pipeline to the richest intact coastline on earth, might be 'nation building'.
I hope you can have access to a Covid shot should you wish to receive one. We are currently in an uprising here in Alberta to recall these crazy fascist politicians by circulating petitions. If enough signatures are collected (60% of the number that voted in the last election) then an election will be called. So far, about half their party has been recalled, and that number could still rise. I think it's similar to your system of being primaried(?). Thanks for engaging in our politics, just as we are with yours. Stay strong, don't give up, millions and millions and millions of us are rooting for you to take your country back from the fascists.
Appreciate the sentiments but as yet no one has actually been recalled. 14 MLAs have been approved for recall process by Elections Alberta to get petitions started and up and running. The canvassers have 90 days to get 60 percent of voter numbers in their riding. Only folks in that riding can sign.
Here in Alberta, the People are rising up. They are using the UCP's own legislation, created by ousted Jason Kenny, to recall a politician for failing to do their job properly. To date, there are 12 MLAs in the UCP Party currently being recalled (almost 50% of their Party). Petitions are circulated in the district of the recalled politician. Only those that live in that district can sign the petition. There must be 60% of signatures of the number that voted in the last election for the petitionto be approved. If successful, it forces a vote in the Alberta Legislature to call an election. The UCP of course never intended to have their rogue legislation used against them. A case of, be careful what you wish for. Les Miserables! 🇨🇦 🍁 ❤️
There are 14 recalls in process. The ucp has 47 seats, a majority of four seats. We only need four recall petitions to be successful with the current recall rules, tho Smith said that they will change the rules again.
As a third generation Albertan, I detest Missy Smith. I deplore the fact that for so many years we have elected conservative leaders, resulting in the most red necked province in the country. I find it despicable that so many Albertans have become anti-vaccers. Now, I, as a senior have to fork out $100 for a covid vaccine. Don't even get me started on the Alberta separation thing, dipsh*t Dani has got to go before she totally ruins this province.
I paid $145 for my Covid shot. I have no idea how many ppl won't get one (I'm guessing many!) due to this steep price of something that responsible government ought to be providing free of charge for the collective good of society. The asylum has been taken over by the patients here in Alberta, however, with the recall petitions building, I think their end is in sight.
14 morophiles or stupidity lovers posing as MLAs to date facing recall notices, a petition spearheaded by Corb Lund to stop mining on the eastern slopes, the AbNDP challenging the ucp in the ledge, Thomas Lucazuk invited to the Senate for kudos on Forever Canadian and placing it in the federal lens, Senator from Alberta Krisopher Wells garnering support for s228 to put limits on the NWC federally
Countless organisatiins defending rights, democracy and the environment, online petitions, protests, volunteers, donors, podcasts like Lisb0923, Charlie, EnergiMedia, Worse then Ever, The Breakdown, ABResistance substack and speaker series etc etc!
Some MLAs even answering emails thoughtfully as Peter Guthrie, bad boy prog con who stood up to Smith, now banished and independent, does.
Alberta is a MODEL for democracy in action. Standing up to fascists and septickists. We are winning by showing up. Keep showing up. The tipping point is nigh.
What late stage capitalism needs as new markets run out.....they have to cannibalize public systems. What else is left for them to become the 'wealth creators' (private) that they long to be?
Libertarians generally speak for themselves. And that's rampant individualism....I've long thought that those for whom no laws apply are immune to good public policy.......and often confuse freedom with licence.
Trump is a classic examply. He's always right and can do no wrong.
That's right! He even has a ballcap saying so. 'TRump was right about everything.' Even his base is starting to see the critical past tense there.
The socalled leaders on the right know damn well that personal freedoms are supposed to be tethered by the over ride of the common good in a social democracy. But America was never founded as a social
democracy. A constitutional republic reviling the colonialist monarchy. Individual rights and freedoms for all even when some rights stomp on others. Survival of the fittest. Atlas shrugged et al.
Amerika has some social democratic elements, or had, but it is delusional to expect it to behave like one now. Manifest destiny!
I suspected what you say while studying in Amerika....lots of good people, but few who understood collective action. Reading Derrick Jenson, the deep green activist over a decade ago......I realized it was worse than I'd thought.
In a book entitled THE CULTURE OF MAKE BELIEVE...he detailed Amerika's fascistic history, down to how many states had KKK governments in the mid years of the 20th C. and how many wobbly boys died at the hands of right wing mobs.
They still mainly think our Tommy Douglas was a communist......and one reason I've never voted Liberal is because the Saskatchewan Liberals employed the aid of the American Medical Associations cash........to try to stop our single payer plan from ever getting off the ground.
They died at the highest rate per capita of any G8 country....kbut sure.
They're mostly all out for something they call Freedom.
I thought of your remarks about late stage capitalism cannibalising itself.

Most appropriate new word (for me at least) of 2025! I can't "like" such an awful situation but you write about it so very well.
Thank you for this, Charlie Angus!
I believe Caroline Kennedy's daughter has a rare leukemia, not cervical cancer. Nonetheless, you are absolutely right about this kakistocracy.
Yes, her diagnosis is leukemia, not cervical cancer. She recently penned an article entitled "A Battle with my Blood," which can be found here: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-weekend-essay/a-battle-with-my-blood
So kaka or caca has the same root meaning poop or s..t? It seems appropriate.

Certainly not impressed so far. Ganley and Irwin continue to impress.
Well said Charlie! I find it disturbing as well.

Preferably, before they destroy our single payer health care and privatize public education.

That’s crazy. I’m so sorry. Even here in the USA I got mine for free.
Nope, in Alberta!
In B.C. my Covid shot was free as was my flu shot. In fact I was reminded by email to book the appointments.
That's the difference between an NDP government and a ucp one.....in a nutshell.
