MAGA ambassador Pete Hoekstra’s swear-filled rant against Canadian trade representatives was much more than a breach of ambassadorial obligation. It represented the gangster nature of Trump diplomacy. And no one is lower on the credibility rung than Pete Hoekstra.
Canadian media have tread carefully around Mr. Hoekstra, but Canadians need to know exactly the kind of man who has been put in charge of Canadian relations.
Hoekstra was a key architect of Project 2025 and has long pushed extremist political positions. He is notorious for spreading disinformation and hate about Muslim people. As for his foreign affairs credentials, he has a dismal record of blame politics and interference in the affairs of other nations. When he was ambassador to the Netherlands, he faced serious criticism for his falsehoods and meddling.
It begs the question: Why did Trump appoint him as ambassador to the United States’ most important trade relationship?
MAGA never had any intention of dealing fairly with Canada. Mr. Hoekstra is here to monkey-wrench trade and to gaslight our officials. He fails the most basic test as an ambassador and must be recalled.
Tiptoeing around the threat will not do us any favours. We need to start calling it out.
Fellow resisters, I encourage you to write to Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand (anita.anand@international.gc.ca) and call for his immediate expulsion from Canada.

I will keep my message short because we both know it is true.
Mr. Hoekstra is not an ambassador. He is a foul-mouthed wrecking ball with no sense of diplomacy.
He despises Canada and will do his best to incite the far right that is growing more dangerous every day in our country.
He must be expelled immediately.

C’mon, Canada. Set the precedent. Eject a MAGA ambassador. Don’t wait for Washington to recall him—spoiler alert: they won’t.
