Quisling (noun): a traitor who collaborates with an enemy force
Foreign political interference normally starts from the outside.
That's why it's called foreign.
Undermining your nation from the inside has older terms – "Fifth column," "Vichy collaborator," and "quisling."
Smith’s Sellout: From Mar-a-Lago to MAGA
How else to describe Premier Danielle Smith, who recently bragged to a far-right media platform, that she approached the Trump administration hoping to pause the tariff rhetoric which was hurting the electoral chances of Pierre Poilievre?
She reached out to a foreign power threatening the very democratic existence of our country with the pitch that Poilievre would "be very much in sync with…the new direction in America."
On January 6th, Trump made it clear that he thought Poilievre was his man in Canada. He stated that if Poilievre were elected, "Our views would be more aligned certainly."
But he also stated how much he hates our nation and people:
"Canadians are one of the nastiest countries to deal with."
Needless to say, there has been a massive backlash from Canadians to all things MAGA. As Canadians came together to fight for our country, the Conservative numbers have seriously tanked. Where previously they bragged of their love of all things Trump, they are now scrambling to get clear of their MAGA cousins.
Steve Mahar reports in the Toronto Star that key Conservative operatives were so freaked out that they had a plan: Conservative MP Jamil Javani was to reach out to his buddy J. D. Vance, and ask Trump to make a statement disavowing himself from MAGA Maple Poilievre.
Lo and behold, Trump did issue a lame statement that he hoped Carney would win. It became a political lifeline for the drowning Poilievre.
If this Trump statement was arranged through a backroom deal, how could this be seen as anything other than colluding with a foreign enemy to undermine our election?
MAGA Maple has been selling out our nation at every step.
Remember when Danielle Smith went to kiss the ring at Mar-a-Lago? She didn't do this as part of Team Canada or even with a strong contingent of prairie leaders. She posted a photo of herself with Trump and the grifter Kevin O'Leary, who has been all over America, promoting the sell-out of Canada to the United States.
And just this past week, she met with Prime Minister Carney to issue a thinly veiled threat to break up the country if he didn't give into a series of demands she put on the table. One of those demands was to end the ban on single-use plastics.
For that, she would create a "national unity crisis."
Our nation faces an unprecedented threat to our right to exist, yet Smith sees this crisis as the ideal time to float the idea of breaking the country apart.
Seriously?
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre was clear when asked about these threats: he said Smith's demands were "reasonable."
Two little toxic peas in a pod.
But let's go back to her comments that Poilievre would be "in sync" with the Trump agenda.
In sync with what exactly? Arbitrary deportations? DOGE? Turning our federal government over to Elon Musk?
Perhaps Smith thinks Poilievre would be more in sync on foreign affairs.
And she’s right.
In the last parliament, Pierre Poilievre's Conservatives voted against Canadian military support for Ukraine and against trade with Ukraine.
Maybe Premier Smith is hoping to get an invite to join Prime Minister Poilievre on a friendship mission to Moscow if he wins.
Canadians See Through the Lies
The Conservatives may be in sync with MAGA, but they are out of touch with Canadians.
Pierre Poilievre has recently blamed Canada for our problems:
"It's not the American's fault. It is our fault. We're stupid."
Canadians aren't stupid. That is why they were quick to see through Trump's fake disavowal of Poilievre.
I want to make it clear: Smith might be trying to sell out our nation, but the people of Alberta are fiercely loyal to our country. That’s why, in the next few weeks, I will be travelling to meet with Albertans as part of the Elbows Up/ Resistance Tour.
We can't let the Quisling Brigade of Smith and Poilievre divide us from each other.
It's Vichy or Vimy.
I know I will see many great Canadians standing on the ridge when the time comes.
As for Smith? She is team Vichy.
Quisling! My new word of the day for Smith. Please make sure you go to Edmonton as well, not just Calgary. Closer for me. Keep up the fight Charlie, you’re the best!
Now there's a term I've not heard in a while - quisling! Each morning I look for your latest post and as always, it is an encouraging breath of fresh air. Thank you, Charlie, for the vital work you do.
