Where’s the eyes, the eyes with the will to see
Where’s the hearts that run over with mercy
Where’s the love that has not forsaken me
Where’s the work that’ll set my hands, my soul free
Where’s the spirit that’ll reign over me
Where’s the promise from sea to shining sea
Wherever this flag is flown
We take care of our own
- Bruce Springsteen, We Take Care of Our Own
I've been on the road a great deal lately, hosting tour stops and building local resistance networks. The rallies are spirited events, and at each one, I can see the growing confidence of Canadians. They are determined to face down the gangsters.
But it’s not just about defending our beautiful country, it’s about defending our core values: inclusion, decency, and diversity.
As you’d imagine, the resistance rallies feature plenty of iconic Canadian symbols – the flag, red and white t-shirts, and, yes, some hockey sticks. However, on Thursday night at the rally in Guelph, Ontario, I broke with protocol and wore a Los Angeles Dodgers blue baseball cap.
Just a few months ago, there’s no way would I have worn any American sports gear – even from teams I have traditionally supported. But when Trump began abusing our country, insulting our leaders and threatening our sovereignty, Canadians were shocked and angry. Fans booed American teams at hockey games. We felt backed into a corner and were spoiling for a fight.
I suppose we hoped that Trump would get distracted or simply TACO. But he's not going anywhere and Canadians understand this now. So what we’re seeing is a movement of resistance that is maturing into something that can sustain itself over a much longer-term struggle.
That’s why I proudly wore a Dodgers ball cap at a rally for Canadian resistance.
It was a shout-out to the team who stood up to the ICE gang. I wanted the people of Los Angeles to know: we stand with you.
The struggle is no longer just about defending our border but also about encouraging grassroots resistance. This includes supporting allies on the other side who are on the frontlines of the fight against fascism.
Here is part of my speech from Guelph. Click the photo to watch and share.
Over these last months of touring, I have learned some important lessons about where we find ourselves at this moment in history. One of the most profound is this: leaders of the resistance are not those in high elected office - the leaders are at the grassroots.
Ordinary Canadians have been leading the fight, from the grocery store aisles to cancelled vacation plans to the rallies in town squares.
We have grassroots resistance. What we need now is to build webs of resistance through local community activism. That’s how we will make our democracy hate-proof and Maga-proof.
Here are three simple steps to building that web:
KEEP THE BOYCOTT STRONG
American governors are growing increasingly concerned over the devastating impact Trump's tariffs are having on their economies. They've witnessed a catastrophic drop in tourism and sales. Our boycott is creating massive pressure.
This is why American governors have been reaching out to our provincial premiers to talk nice. But that's not going to work; it’s gonna take more.
We hold the line until Trump breaks and the rule of law is restored.
STOP DOOM SCROLLING
Resistance is about resilience, so give your spirit a break from the toxic online bubble. Get out from behind the screens and into your communities. Volunteer. Join a group. And if there is no group, start one.
Like the punk kids used to say: this is a DIY (Do It Yourself) moment in standing up to fascism. There is no rule book. We’re figuring it out as we go.
Small actions can build into larger movements.
Witness the incredible rise of Grandmothers Against Genocide, which my team has been promoting. By building resistance at the local level with local leaders, we build a movement that cannot be beaten.
PROMOTE, ENCOURAGE & CHEER ON RESISTERS
The mainstream media are not likely to tell you the hero stories of ordinary people who are standing up at the local and national levels. So, when you come across stories of resistance, share the news.
The MAGA mob are not some all-powerful monolith - they’re a gang of grifters trying to pull off a massive con. They panic when people speak up. The Dodgers may be among our more famous resistors, but they stepped up because so many of the fans in the bleachers took the first brave steps. Those were the ordinary people standing out in the streets facing down the armed power of Trump's military.
Resistance is contagious. Spread the word.
We will keep kicking the darkness until it bleeds daylight.
As an American on the right side of history and fighting like hell....thank you. We had an extremely difficult weekend and with little sleep this was the first read of the day. We need to know folks outside of this hellscape see us fighting. I feel a little better and after a nap will get boots back on the ground.
Love your movement, love the speech. Keep resisting my Canadian friends! We Americans need an example to follow!
