Charlie, how do you square your support for a 300,000 member citizen army / militia with the fact that the federal government is making gun ownership increasingly more expensive or downright banning rifles? I just had a .22 cal rifle banned on the grounds that it is an assault style rifle. That's ludicrous. A citizen army is not compatible with a disarmed citizenry and the idea that the federal government is going to buy 200,000 rifles and somehow make them available, but not really, is nonsensical. Countries like Sweden and Finland, who have potential enemies at their border, know that a trained citizen army is a deterrent. Canada now has a hostile country at its border. Why not create a special firearms license for veterans who had attained certified standing in various CAF combat arms elements? I'll buy my own rifle and ammunition, and membership at a licensed range. I do that now.

Charlie, I have a concern about Doug Ford becoming more authoritarian. Too MAGA. Passing bills that give his party more control and help him to stay in power. A lot of questionable decisions and possible corruption. He’ll probably take on more US companies to run private health care, and invite American companies to work in the Ring of Fire, at a time when we need less US ownership.
Just reading this morning about the document obtained by the CBC (let’s hear it for investigative news) that the Canadian DND is trying to figure out how to build up a citizens’ army. Where do I sign up!?
For Canada this is a terrifying statement from the US National Security Strategy. Either Canada complies or is punished, regardless of Canada's own goals.
"We want other nations to see us as their partner of first choice, and we will (through various means) discourage their collaboration with others."
That line isn’t diplomacy. It’s dominance dressed up as “partnership.”
Let’s crack it open.
“We want other nations to see us as their partner of first choice”
Fine. Great powers always want influence. Nothing shocking there.
But then comes the knife:
“and we will (through various means) discourage their collaboration with others.”
That’s not alliance management.
That’s coercive alignment.
It’s the geopolitical version of:
“You can date me, but if you even think about seeing someone else, there will be consequences.”
For Canada, this flips seventy years of foundational assumptions upside down:
• Canada chooses alliances, not vice versa.
• The US is a partner, not a suzerain.

• Disagreements are handled as equals, not “discouraged.”
This line implies a shift from cooperation to conditional loyalty.
The bland phrasing masks something harsher: instrumentalizing smaller and mid-sized allies.
And that “various means” clause is the dark little suitcase. It could imply:
• trade pressure
• defense conditionality
• intel cooperation throttling
• diplomatic isolation
• tariff retaliation
• cross-border regulatory pressure
Essentially:
“Make us your priority or we’ll punish you until you do.”
For Canada, that’s alarming because:
Our national interests occasionally diverge from Washington’s
Arctic policy, climate goals, trade diversification, China engagement, critical minerals, even Ukraine strategy. Normal allies disagree.
This line treats disagreement as disloyalty
That’s not alliance language. That’s sphere-of-influence language.
It invites punishment for autonomy
Which Canada cannot afford to ignore, but absolutely cannot afford to normalize.
It undermines the whole idea of a rules-based order
If “discourage collaboration with others” includes things like Europe, Indo-Pacific partners, or multilateral organizations, Canada gets squeezed into a world that is smaller, more brittle, and more dependent on the mood of one leader.
This isn’t strategy.
This is territorial behavior.
It signals that Canada’s sovereignty is being seen not as a shared asset but as something to be managed and bounded.
