Is Canada the next Ukraine?
Let’s be clear: Trump’s latest “bombshell” announcement of throwing an 35% tariff on Canadian goods is not a negotiating tactic. It’s part of an ongoing campaign to subordinate Canada — tariffs are just a weapon in that effort.
This dramatic escalation comes after the Canadian government agreed to drop the Digital Services Tax as a sign of good faith and chose not to retaliate when Trump arbitrarily imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
Never mind that Donald Trump has claimed that he’ll have a trade deal in place with Canada by July 21.
And all of this unfolds as Prime Minister Mark Carney continues to reassure the United States that the Canadian government is doing its bit to address the so-called “fentanyl border crisis” — a false crisis created by MAGA that has been used as the pretext for going after our sovereignty.
Canada in the Crosshairs
Is anyone surprised?
Did anyone really think we could negotiate in good faith with a gangster?
From the beginning of his reign, Trump has been steadfast in his determination to break our nation. To force us to become a vassal state. He brags that we should become “the 51st.” He’s thrown tariffs on more than 150 countries (Russia is the exception) but Trump has never wavered in his view that Canada is his objective.
And the political rhetoric against our nation continues to increase.
We have FBI director Kash Patel claiming Canada is a hotbed of terrorist threats. Homeland Security director Kristi Noem claims that there is a northern border crisis and says El Salvadoran gangs are flooding over the border into Michigan. Ben Shapiro, the right-wing hack who recently appeared with Alberta MAGA premier Danielle Smith, says the United States should take us over and turn us into a new Puerto Rico.
Let’s remember: the people of Puerto Rico aren't allowed to vote in American elections. They have no elected representation in Congress. The best they get is a non-voting Resident Commissioner.
That's what Trump sees for us — an occupied territory.
And it’s already getting real. We are dealing with over 50 Canadian citizens who have been kidnapped by ICE, with one dying in U.S. custody.
This Isn’t About Soybeans
Let's not kid ourselves. This has nothing to do with tariffs on soybeans or aluminum. This is a full blown attempt by MAGA to break our country.
Canadians get this.
I hear from people across the country every day who understand very clearly that what we are facing is an aggressive fascist gangster threat. MAGA hates our democracy, our inclusivity, our fairness.
Canadians know that our nation must take steps to address the growing threat.
What we need to see is a determined response from the political class.
The Unthinkable Can Happen
I have been thinking a great deal about Bob Woodward's book War, where he gives the inside scoop on the thinking that went down as the intelligence showed that Vladimir Putin's increasingly bellicose ranting about Ukraine was actually leading Russia down the path to war.
Even as the evidence of troop movements was mounting, people thought the prospect was insane. Nuts. Nobody wanted to believe it. The Brits thought the idea of Putin blowing his relationship with Europe to invade Ukraine was just too far-fetched.
The intelligence was shared with President Zelensky. Even he was skeptical. It simply wasn't in Russia's long-term interest to take such a gamble.
And then it happened.
Am I saying that Trump will turn his military on us? Like with Putin in 2021, such a prospect is nuts. Loony tunes, right? Nobody would be that crazy. But Trump has proven to be a much more erratic authoritarian leader than Putin.
Eight months ago, such a prospect would have been unthinkable. Now we are living in a world where the unthinkable must be contemplated.
We Need A Real Response — Now
In response to this tariff threat, Prime Minister Carney needs to shift from his “elbows-down nice guy” approach. It isn't working. It won't work.
He needs to reinstate the Digital Services Tax. You can't unilaterally disarm in the face of a threat. He should imitate Prime Minister Trudeau, who vowed to go dollar for dollar, pound for pound, the last time Trump tried to steamroll us.
That was the first time Trump TACO'd.
Is it risky? Of course. Would it have a potentially devastating impact? Yes. But it would put enormous pressure on the American economy in a substantial way. The American people need to feel the impacts. Trump TACOs when the economy dives.
Our only other option is to watch our economy slowly bleed away from Trump's gangster threats.
Canadians are ready for tough choices. We are looking for strong and direct language from our leaders. Canadians have been steadfast in holding the line on the boycott and are the front line in the fight for our nation and our democracy.
Our nation's political class needs to see the threat very clearly for what it is.
The United States, a country once governed by the rule law, is disintegrating before our eyes. In its place is a heavily armed gangster regime driven by disinformation and rage politics.
Canadians get this. Our leaders must as well.
I invite you to watch the video I recorded in response to Trump’s latest threat — if it speaks to you, consider subscribing and following on Youtube for more.
Thank you.
I've never been in favour of the Digital Services Tax being dropped. They do business here. They make profits here. Why shouldn't they pay taxes here? It just makes sense. But beyond that - yes, yes, yes. Trump is trying to break us as he promised to do from the beginning. He said he'd use economic force, and I have no idea why anyone believes otherwise. A 35% tariff? Go find business elsewhere. Stop trying to negotiate. Yes, it may be tough, but I'm certain we could pivot and create strong relationships abroad. I'm not anti-American, but I am anti-American regime. Like many others across our country. Thank you for saying the stuff no one else does. It makes me feel not so alone.
Hitler invaded Poland. Putin invaded Ukraine. China eyes Taiwan. Even North Korea would love South Korea - they point weapons. All Fascist regimes are imperialistic by definition.
Warfare does not have to bullets and missiles. It can be propaganda, cyberwarfare, or economic. It can be intelligence gathering and spying. It can be numerous threats, demands,
Economic suffocation. Numerous Annexation Threats. Political interference via Mapla MAGA. Heck, the GOP "complaining" about the wildfires. Those are what ENEMIES do. What nations at war do. This isn't just "bullying", it's WARFARE.
Trump has already in engaged in warfare with Canada.
But millions of us Americans are rooting for Canada. We are vacationing there. Boycotting our own products when possible. Even investing. And g-d forbid the US does launch missiles, we would not be cheering for fascist invaders who feel they have every right to "police the world". Just like we protested Iraq, or Afghanistan - we view this as beyond a moral outrage.
It is not just the ultimate betrayal to Canada. It is the ultimate betrayal to the American people as well.
