I don't want to be a pessimist, but...

Our civilisation, as we understand it is crumbling. The ones who are doing the worst harm are in control, and those that have a chance to counter them don't necessarily have the means to stop our frenetic course. Not just fossil fuel, but the merchandization of all life forms, the misuse of all our natural resources, the lack of respect for the Earth, water and air, all of this is multiplied exponentially by all the ridiculous missiles being launched in so many places of the world. All life should be considered precious, and today no life is precious. The only thing a billionaire wants is more billions, it's a sickness and we are perhaps entering the terminal phase.

Our only hope is that the sacred spark of life be stronger than this species that I am part of. We are racing towards our own extinction, but we cannot imagine the time it will take. The beauty of the stars and planets spinning is so great that my hope is in that abstract beauty. Surely another experiment will take form, the universe is full of imagination.

It might be useful to fill the streets with people holding signs pinning the nefarious Smith government on their current anti-democratic and pro O&G stance & legislation?

Cory Doctorow makes an excellent point about politicians: they do not do the right thing unless we truly lean on them to make the correct decisions for us, the people. When Doctorow talks about consequences for politicians for making poor decisions, he envisions the hounding of them while in office and after they leave office, letting them know in no uncertain terms for what they are responsible, making that their legacy. Canadians have historically been too "polite" (cowardly?) to ensure that our political leaders know that they screwed up while in office and afterwards. If there is no accountability beyond not being voted in for another term, then there is no accountability at all. This approach does not mean taking illegal actions, but protesting with signs that state what they have done and for what they are responsible outside their homes or outside their places of work, for example, is not illegal. If action is desired, then the consequences for inaction must be commensurate.

Time to stop subsidizing big oil and go all in on renewables.

After relentless and well financed propaganda campaigns from the fossil fuel industry and political right, the public has largely been lulled into a comfortable sleep in respect to the climate challenge. Any problem that stretches over decades is beyond the immediate concern of most people. Nothing will change this except the most profound and stark economic and humanitarian crisis (leading to extremely high food prices and mass migration, for example) directly impacting the population everywhere. This will probably unfold spasmodically starting with geopolitical crises (maybe the one we see presently), and then environmental collapse over the medium to long term (10 to 30 years). Better hope basic physics is substantially incorrect on all this...Good luck with that.

Global Environmental Changes are the biggest challenge the world has yet to begin to address.

Countries are losing the ability to grow there own food. Yet they refuse to acknowledge the problem.

If this world and the people who govern this world want any chance at some semblance of survivability as we know it; carbon fuels must stay in the ground.

What if Canada’s sovereignty collapses (not joking, see Alberta and the sale of Albertans information). Yes, I would like more green policies. Can we counteract the US? Hmmm? Answer the fact that Trump is drilling in the Alaska Arctic. That he is ignoring Florida’s land loss to the sea. Yes, I get you will say Canada should do more, yes, we should. But what comes first, sovereignty, or bowing to the US by letting them have their way, solely because we are powerless. Come on Charlie, you are still a politician, so is Elizabeth May. Do we capitulate and let the US do whatever because we are “green” or do we fight them as a sovereign nation, then start going more green (but then again see M. Poililievre’s speech today), he’s willing to let the US mow over Canada, are you?.

Thanks and let’s not forget EACOP that aims to dig a huge oil pipeline through several countries in the Congo Basin, destroying irreplaceable species, habitats, rainforest, and the homes of indigenous people and animals. Also releasing tons of trapped carbon.

Science fiction writers have been warning man kind for years about things like climate change and had them made into movies, the ideas just don't come off the tops of their heads, they do research.

Two movies that give a warning about climate change to watch are The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, the first explains of what is happening with the polar caps and they both talk about the change in the weather, forest fires on the west coast of North America flooding and winter storms in places where there shouldn't be, things are happening now that we need to start making changes. Now we have been causing the problem for years and there is going to be a time when mother nature says enough, places around the world are trying to make change like China who has the largest amount of wind turbines and solar farms in the world and there are many other countries following in suite, but there are still needs for fossil fuels the way we collect them needs to change, like when Mark Carny made a deal with Danielle Smith, there were conditions like carbon capture and that the pipe line still needed approval of the B.C. government and the Indigenous leaders in the proposed area for the pipeline. I watched the news the other day, Trump signing an executive order for the Keystone pipeline, now I wander, did he talk to Carny first or is this just him jumping the gun, cause I know that Carny said that he wasn't going to take a deal that doesn't work good for Canada so I'm pretty sure that it is just Trump jumping the gun without thinking like he did with the Iran war. Now the other thing that science fiction writers have been warning us about is AI, years before it was a movie Isaac Asimov wrote I Robot, then there is Terminator, I mean isn't anybody concerned take a look China has already built a robot that ran a marathon and beat the best time by two hours, and now the tec giants want them to think too, and teach them to self evolve, that scares me.

In conclusion the rich and powerful one way or another are trying to destroy humanity either by AI or climate change but with that I will leave you with something that George Carlin said when talking about climate change quote " Get rid of all the people and the world will fix itself". Not to sound morbid but I believe that mother nature was trying to make change with covid, I will leave you with that thought and finish my rant. To you Charlie and all my brothers and sisters in Canada and around the world I send love to you all and have a great day, Manitoba out.

This column made me check when Kim Stanley Robinson wrote his Science in the Capital trilogy because one of the scenarios facing the world was the Gulf Stream grinding to a halt. The first book, Forty Signs of Rain, was wrottem in 2004. In the trilogy, the President actually cares about climate change and dedicates considerable resources to turning things around. Wouldn't that be nice?

Life forms might have difficulties. An Inconvient Truth film.

An Inconvenient Truth is a 2006 American documentary film directed by Davis Guggenheim about former vice president of the United States Al Gore's campaign to educate people about global warming. The film features a slide show that, by Gore's own estimate, he has presented over 1,000 times to audiences worldwide.

Regulation. Enforce anti-monopoly laws. Regulate and break up large corporations and monopolies. Do not allow large companies to merge and to consolidate.

Regulate energy companies as public utilities, and do not allow them to consolidate.

Regulate banks, financial institutions and venture capital firms for the public benefit. Not OK to privatize gains and share losses by financial institutions.

I studied climate change like I was back in university for the first 2 years of my retirement. I read everything. Looked at the science and the math. Nothing made sense until I looked at it from the point of view of addiction (something I know about). Homo Sapiens are addicted to fossil carbon. Quitting will be as hard as a person quitting smoking/gambling/drugs. We know there is a better future but the cost to get there is too great without a crash. And no, we are not "smart" enough or "strong-willed" enough to do it without a crash. And remember climate changes normally occur in millennia not years. We aren't used to dealing with normal natural timelines - too slow.

So, I no longer worry about climate - AMOC, Thwaites, permafrost collapse etc. are all in our future (and worse that we don't know about yet). The best we can do is prepare. ALSO: It is important to differentiate between biologic carbon and fossil carbon. Nature will manage bio-carbon as she has been doing for billions of years. BUT fossil carbon introduced into the biosphere by humans is 100% of the problem. So ignore warnings about forest fires and cow farts when it comes to climate change. That's a red herring. As are windmills, solar, nuclear. The problem is not a lack of windmills - the problem is fossil carbon. Renewables plus fossil carbon is just climate collapse with electric cars.

I've done what I can. I'm as close to 0 fossil carbon use as is possible in Canada. As a boomer (we caused this) it's the least I can do to atone. But I am no longer chicken little. The sky IS falling but our addiction keeps us from even talking about quitting fossil carbon (except for that conference recently, Yay?).

Catherine Beck's avatar

We Boomers did NOT all cause this sir. I resent being lumped in with all those who have been profiligate, whether a Boomer or some ancestor antecedent.

I too studied the subject at university.

History: The onset of human-caused climate change began with widespread COAL use in the UK industrial expansion about 150-175 years ago. Followed by the US. Followed by Europe. Followed by the widespread use of 'natural GAS' (methane) and PETROLEUM products to power everything. So stupid.

Smart people kept using wind, water flows, and sun.

Michael Grant's avatar

We were the first generation that knew we fucked up. We had all the proof needed in the 70's. AND WE DID NOTHING. Still we hung on to our 9mi/gal cars filled with $.50/gal gas. Now it is too late.

If you look at the Keeling Curve, atmospheric CO2 only begins to grow uncontrollably (exponentially?) around 1950. That's where we get the term "hockey stick" graph.

Catherine Beck's avatar

Good comment. That's why I've been so weirdly abstemious. Which many would say is foolish and won't make a difference. To which I say: It's how I have to be, after working in rural African villages.

I realize major industries and those who control them are massively responsible. Yet in everyday desires and wants, the responsibility also spreads around.
