I willnever forget what the captain of the Exxon Valdez said to the press after the huge oil tanker spilled a disastrous quantity of oil in the ocean off Alaska in 1989. He said that his generation had had to clean up the previous generation's mess, so the next generation could clean up his. This is the way I remember it (I was gobsmacked), but I don't mind being corrected if I have it wrong.
Thanks Charlie, great article, if sad news. I was wondering if Canada/US are still working together to stop fires? I've had to wear a mask when outside and run air filters inside earlier this week due to smoke from Canadian fires and I'm in Maine. I feel bad for anyone affected by the smoke but maybe this is what it will take to wake the people of Canada up as to their future! All I can say is heat pump technology is great! I've saved so much money by installing heat pumps, even in my 120yo, not air tight house. It stays at 70* with outside temps 0* and the woodstove helps below that. I save about $500/mth from not having oil anymore in the winter and as a bonus now have a/c too for our 2 weeks (and growing) 90+* temps every summer. Please Canada, vote against the greedy Maple MAGA billionaires trying to ruin your country. Learn from the US mistakes!
And Canada was an early leader in hydrogen fuel cells. The lie about EVs is if we all had them every bridge and many roads would have to be rebuilt because of their increased weight, and the power grid replaced. All on the public dime. It’s never going to happen. The Govt could of intervened and implemented hydrogen trains and long haul trucks to start, Japan has developed hydrogen filling stations in shipping containers that can be dropped at existing gas stations, and Toyota and Honda have created hydrogen cars. But no, capitalism always favours short term profits. We will remain fucked until we change how we are governed to break the corporate takeover of our democracy
Lol..they are not thinking! They have a set mind that climate change is fake and people are over reacting. AB is subsidizing all of Canada with oil revenue. When countered with facts, they shut down. Difficult to change their thought process.
We can blame Danielle Smith etc. but why are the majority of Canadians not demanding action? I mean for all its flaws, the Carbon tax was hated. We never seem to vote for what truly affects us - healthcare, climate, homelessness, so how do we fix this?
Danielle Smith is THE worst thing for Alberta and for Canada! If she and her separatist Magas don’t want to be a part of this great nation they should all move to the USA and leave the rest of us Albertans and Canadians alone! She is an embarrassment, and corruption personified.
Her agenda of separatism, health care privatization, provincial police force, antagonism of the rest of Canada and our Canadian values, and her dangerous Trump rhetoric of Drill baby Drill! are not the values and interests of ALL Albertans. The people in support of her are mostly oil thugs and rural rednecks - the rest of us are slaves to her annihilation.
I do not disagree, except where is there rest of Albertans? This province feels the most effects of climate change, anti vaxing etc. and yet keeps on voting Conservative???
We need more straight talk like this! My Alberta relatives feel that (boo-hoo) all of Canada is against them. We have had numerous discussions on DS and on the possibility of thinking Canada first. Always ending in a stale mate.
I rally behind the words in the paragraph:
"There isn't a location in the world with better opportunities for clean energy than Alberta. They have the energy know-how, skilled workforce and geography, that could transform them into the clean energy capital of North America."
ALBERTA...get out of your drill baby drill, rut and adapt to the times!!
“Isn’t saving our country from climate disaster a nation-building project?… Prime Minister Carney needs to put a plan on the table that is more credible than trying to keep the oil lobby happy. We need bring in the skills of the energy workers and make the most of our abundant natural advantages.
But to do so means taking on the ideology of MAGA Alberta. The window for action on a planetary crisis is rapidly closing.”
Speaking from AB—repeating above because the whole essay is SO timely—SO well said🙏🙏
Climate science is shouting - “Fire Weather” confirms - action NOW for LIVABLE earth — basis of ALL “the economy”!!!
Repeat—the science demands action in this decade —while it can still make a difference‼️ — for our children and theirs in the last half of the century (when we are dust).
Also, as that old Pinko himself, Peter Lougheed, said, the.best.way to handle.Alberta.oil is.not to.ship it anywhere but build the.refineries in.Alberta.and ship out the finished products. Climate Emergency Unit has a postcard campaign to contact ministers and explicitly draw the connection between wildfires and oil and gas decisions being discussed and made right now:https://www.signedseareddelivered.com/
Right on Charlie! Let Danielle Smith put her crack pot ideology before the voters and we’ll see where we land. Big oil has now had at least a couple of decades, if not longer, to reconfigure their business plan moving away from oil to clean energy. If Smith wants to help the nation how about making oil companies build a fleet of water bombers-in exchange for not being nationalized and then decommissioned!
So very sad

The soon to begin civil war in the USA is but a footnote to the War of the Climate.
OIL IS DEAD.
The data point re: wildfire damage to the environment is astounding!
Even more puzzling is the Alberta Premier's addiction to smelling gasoline fumes of big oil!
TYPO in the URL - 'county' should be 'country'
