The way I see it is that we have two different enemy fronts to concern ourselves with. The Americans and T-rump MAGA crew from the south but we also need to keep our eyes on our home front! We have factions in all provinces working from the inside out to destroy our economy and weaken our democracy! Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia all have premiers that are working from the same playbook for sure - Smith so far is the only one actually pushing for separation, but Ford and Houston are changing laws, and giving themselves the power over the people all the while wasting money and weakening the economy! They are planning on stripping all the resources and giving it to the oligarchs and Americans - meanwhile leaving the provinces in debt! I am sure there are other premiers, (and they may not all be cons) that are working on the same plan.

trump will soon be gone, if the good lord has any say we wont have to wait 30:more months or whatever the number is. The Americans have a very long road ahead and will need friends. Doubt that Vance will get in he is hated, Rubio is a sycophant, so he will not get in but there are good people who will run from both parties. so in the meantime, build our trade elsewhere, as we are doing in a great way, so we are never ever beholden to a whack job like trump again.

I share your queasiness about building war machines in Canada. On the flip side, if the lack of bourbon sales stings, imagine the burn when Canada and European NATO members pull their defense spending away from the US. The massive American military has been massively underwritten by its allies since WWII. We've all been sending our wealth to the US to support their military and, in the supreme irony, countries that buy their munitions need American permission to deploy them. It's long past time for a change.

Agreed, we must remain steadfast and informed. A little perturbed about how much military hardware we still seem to be buying from the US who seem to specialize in expensive stuff when Ukraine has shown that much cheaper works just as well. Also the nature of warfare seems to be changing.. do we really need all those F35s and monster weaponry when drones now seem to be the weapon of choice. Saw Ukraine's president speaking at this weekend meeting of Europeans, seems like Ukraine has developed a robust weapons industry ... it would be ironic ( and good news) if Ukraine became the next big weapons supplier undercutting the US who has failed to live up to expectations. Pretty sad though that as the world continues to corrode politically and environmentally that we still talk wars and weaponry. I thought we were supposed to be smart?

I get both ends of this paradox. The need for resolve in coming out from the American umbrella to defend our sovereignty. And bankers making $. 😜. Other voices are needed to complement this necessary work. Our charter of rights, guarding the diversity of all canadians. New role for NDP??

The Supreme Court definitely ruled: TARIFFS ARE TAXES.

Everyone with a triple-digit I. Q. knows that consumers of commodities pay tariffs, not the manufacturer or the government in the country of origin. Every business in every country in the world knows this. But Donald Trump and Fascist Republicans continue to lie about it.

Why?

Supporting Trump’s lies that Americans benefit from tariffs, MAGA Republican Members of Congress ignore Trump’s criminal disregard of the law that clearly requires Congressional approval for the imposition of tariffs.

Why?

Trump has already lost his tariff war. China signed the world’s largest free-trade agreement with Japan and 14 other Asian nations. Canada and Mexico are organizing similar agreements with Europe and South America.

Not only does Trump lack the legal authority to impose tariffs, he lacks the economic education, the diplomatic experience, the personal discipline, the reputation for honesty, and—most importantly—the intellectual acuity to negotiate with Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, or Mark Carney of Canada, or Xi Jinping of China.

In full agreement with Ronald Reagan’s tariff views, these three leaders laugh at Trump’s “on again/off again” TACO Tariffs. Xi Jinping has positioned China to assume economic leadership of the world when the United States becomes Trump’s seventh bankruptcy.

I write as an US citizen, disgusted with what 77 million of my fellow citizens did in 2024 by voting for #47. This situation will not be fixed, even if Trump is removed from office. There needs to be a new Constitution written to deal with the realities of 21st Century politics. Our country may need to break up into smaller countries, or parts absorbed into Canada (I personally think New England, where I live, would make a nice province in Canada). Go your own way, Canada. Don't look back. There are many millions of us who support you. We'll eventually get it right, but it will likely take many years.

all northern border states and the west coast should join canada…… let the rest fend for themselves as these are the states that support the rest!

It is my belief that the US will try to take us over either economically or militarily. The European countries in the 1930s were in denial about the oncoming German invasion and subsequent occupation. Even up to the day before May 10, 1940, Germany denied they were going to invade! France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark etc. were very ill-prepared militarily. Not to mention that there were factions within these countries who supported a “greater Germany”.

I agree with you too. The sense that I get from talking with others about this is 'meh' at best. I feel that the overwhelm is so great that fight, flight, freeze of fawn has kicked in for most people. Freeze and fawn seems to be the reaction most people have. Or the denial that it will ever happen. As you say, the Germans said the same thing right up to the 11th hour. We are little in the age of indulgence where most of us have never lived through a war that directly affects us. It feels surreal.

Annie Weeks's avatar

Yes, there is definitely a certain kind of flaw in humanity that finds it hard to believe that tragedy, be it catastrophic illness, death, or invasion by a foreign power can happen. I so remember hearing that after Brexit occurred, some said that they had voted for it but didn’t really believe it would actually happen. And look where Great Britain’s economy is now. I expect there are many in Alberta who are not interested in fighting against the separtist forces afoot there. My niece who lives in Alberta believes that she will get a better pension, but “doesn’t know enough about it.” And plans on voting for Smith’s party. It’s so unfortunate that we, the lucky ones who enjoy living in a democracy, will not take the time to understand how it functions—that it depends on we the citizens.

I have family in Alberta too, on both sides of the issue. The one's for separation believe the same about their pension. Told us recently that we will need a passport to get into Alberta. WTF. It's just madness. I live in BC, what happens to us here? I have been writing to both my MP and the Carney's office. I talk about it with friends/family/colleagues and what I hear is, 'oh, you can do that?' It's our government. Of course we can do that! We are sleep walking through life.

It is extraordinary how the promise of money can work to get people on your side. Some in the US said they would vote for Trump again (in 2024) because he gave them Covid cheques.

So sad for your uneducated niece.

I agree with you

So the pod casts I have watched from the USA think that as soon as Trump is voted out all will just come bouncing back between Canada and the USA. They say that in a matter of a couple of years all will be forgiven. I mentioned that they did re-elect Trump after what he did to the Capital building among other things.

Who is to say your voters won't do the same thing again causing more pain? And it will take at least one maybe two generations just to get over the financial nightmare of this autocratic, dictator, who only thinks about himself, and capitalism. My god the shear arrogance of the USA is enough to make me want to vomit.

Kathy Richards's avatar

I just watched a USA podcast where they dealt with facts and realism and said that it would be generations before the USA ever recovered from all the damage that has been done. That is more likely the case- Canada may never be able to truly trust them again!

Doreen McKay's avatar

it will take America sonlong to recoup from this aberration trump, they do not realize the harm he has done to the institutions, the country, the people. America will be looking for handouts from other countries to feed their people. It will take a very long time.

John F Psutka's avatar

John, the podcasters may be correct but hope is not a strategy. there may never be a free fair election in the USA again . As a matter of fact , one could argue there never has been, with the way America distorts democracy. The USA is infamous with gerrymandering , suppression of voting rights, voting rule changes just before elections, reduced access to voting sites, and attacks on mail in voting. Republicans can never have free and fair voting . They would never win. Even the election of State legislatures governs the state map voting districts which in themselves , are grossly distorted in favour of Republican members. The whole voting state controlled process, is corrupt. To my mind, it is irreparably corrupt.

Liz Fox's avatar

And that doesn't even consider the role of money in the US election system

John F Psutka's avatar

You are correct Liz. I haven't even started on Dark political money, conspiracy theories, QANON, Russian social media interference, the SCOTUS acceptance of the Citizens vs FEC, and the recent dismantling of the Voting Rights Act. The final addition to this totally unfair Democracy??? is the unfair representation by Congress in the House and totally unequal representation of the Senate seats. ( ie. California population (53 million) gets the same 2 seats as South Dakota ( 880,000)population.

Carol's avatar

There will not be a free election it’s already gone past that

Sadly, I tend to agree. I think these traitors realize they can't afford to lose.

As an American who is horrified by Trump and his attitudes toward Europe, I am glad Canada is doing this for the sake of Ukraine and the rest of Europe. Putin beware.

trumpler is unstable mentally and recently 30 psychiatrists and psychologists are supporting the senate to remove trumpler as he is dangerous and can call for a nuclear strike, which he has threatened to do numerous times. Project 2025 is one bad thing, but the president alone can call for a nuclear strike! and he wants too...the world watches as political leaders say enough is enough, no one wants to destroy the planet. PM Carney is doing an excellent job of leadership in these dangerous days, unlike the conservatives are trying to make [political hay with a mad man who has threatened our country a number of times, and meeting with him personally and his maga aids, shame!!! this needs to stop! hold the line, steady as she goes Captain Carney, we are with you and elbows up, to whatever comes our way! Canada we stand on guard for thee, except the conservatives, shame.

I have to tell this great story from one of our friends here in Nova Scotia. His mother was 14 and living with her family in occupied Belgium during WWII. They had to "host" a Nazi officer in their home, but the family was also in the underground resistance. As the family sat around the table one day, this young girl was busy cleaning a rifle used by the underground when the officer came back unexpectedly. She situated the rifle on her lap under the table with all the bits and pieces she was using, and sat there for some two hours without shaking or freaking out until he finally left. Talk about courage! We all have a part to play should we be called upon.
