So what is to be done ... in short everything don't wait for government insulate your home change out inefficient doors and windows. Early nineties I used to show James Burke’s ‘After the Warming’ program to all my students in Social Studies classes. I wonder today if it had any impact at all …
Fossil fuels form only a part of the narrative of our inability to protect and preserve our Home, Earth, the only home we will ever have. Added to our woes and miscalculations are deforestation; habitat loss, which leads to species loss: and the continued wars, which poison the air, water and land.
We have lost three billion birds since 1970. We have also loss a significant amount of insects. The "windshield effect" is clear; yes, there is science supporting this, as there is science supporting climate change. Less insects hitting our windshields, which was common until about 20 years ago, because there are less insects flying around, period.
We humans are chiefly responsible for one ecological disaster after another. Hardly makes us a species that ought to dominate our Earth. The smart thing to do is to change the paradigm. Stop Dominating. Start Cooperating. With other species.
There you have it, that is the situation in a nutshell and how we got there. I like the concept of presenting a way out, a solution, one that worked in the past. That is good, but as we all know it is frought with all kinds of problems. Monbiot in his book Heated from that era also presented solutions at the end. We need to work on more solutions, more outlets, more paths that become roads to saving our planet otherwise despair kicks in.
An informative historical overview and encouragement that organized work to halt bad industry practices have & do make a difference. Thanks for this info.
But - the power of $$$ is daunting. Even 'green' energy relies on resource mining & manufacturing using O&G and coal for the production of solar & wind solutions. We really need a focus on innovation to invent less polluting energy production solutions and better policies that guide logging and building practices. All (most) human enterprise is motivated by economics so that should motivate innovation.
You have to wonder why so many bury their heads in the sand. I am on a climate committee for a small coastal community. Everything else is more important to most. Climate problems are in the distant future.
