I have no children, no grandchildren. I worry about the PLANET, and all life on it!! Human, animal, plant! I, too, thought we were making baby steps towards social & environmental justice. Now, age 79, I really am losing faith. …..but onward….
I have two grown children who have their life ahead of them. I am stuck between grief and boiling anger. I am 70 and have lived a full life. I would risk it all for the safety of my children, all of our children, and for my beloved country.

My gut goes to a mode of "Be Prepared" much like the Girl Guide Motto as we know the gangster moves quickly with the intent and speed to overwhelm. We keep ourselves grounded and prepared when we connect with our friends and family daily and speak honestly about what is happening. Trust in this country is essential. We can do it.

I salute all the American writers who were "awake" way before T was elected the first time such as Timothy Snyder (now at Toronto University) and Nancy McLean from Duke University. Same here Charlie. I retired two years ago at age 72. Started working when I was 16. At first I felt angry that this was now my retirement. Now all I feel is resolve. I will do everything I can to give my grandchildren the future they deserve.
I agree Charlie, it has to stop here, we must begin doing what we can to keep our freedom and our democracy, this gangster politics is wrong is so many ways, horrific to watch what is happening to our neighbors in Michigan, and they aren't going to upper class suburbia, no they are going to the lower cost parts of towns and causing shit there, they are targetting the working class poor in Michigan. When will their better off Americans begin fighting with the|??
Yes, it is important to resist, but how exactly? The methods of nonviolent resistance are well known. Why do you not advocate the widespread training of Canadian individuals and institutions (religious institutions, trade unions, peace organizations and so on) in how to respond nonviolently in the event of an incursion? It could be done with or without the assistance of the federal government, though the latter would be more effective.
Part of the process, I believe, is repentance. We need to repent for decades of not taking DJT seriously; of playing him as a buffoon. I understand a certain German leader was also portrayed as a clown at first, and millions upon millions of people were tortured, terrorized and/or died as a result. I saw a TV special (from a couple of years ago) in which Billy Crystal made satiric jokes about the man, and I was reminded of a time in the early 90s, when Crystal MCd the Oscars. He did his impression of DJT looking at the New York City skyline, saying "got it - got it - got it - want it ..." Big laughs. The past decade has been about him trying to get the last laugh.
So - repentance? That's a spiritual concept, but I think it's important to include that in our determination to turn things around. Confessing and releasing our past inability to take seriously the threat we're now facing, can help us move forward without fear.

Canada needs to step up fast in the new world order. With the recent increases in military spending announced, and the 300,000 citizens army - we should be sending troops to Greenland, Ukraine, Venezuela, Palestine. We all must sacrifice. Canada Strong!
