Gordie Howe Bridge Connecting Windsor and Detroit is opening Sept 2025

Paid for by Canada.

Named after the man who threw elbows and scored goals.

American motorists will have to shell out to pay the tolls and help cover:

Construction costs

Canadian ingenuity and engineering

Cross the bridge. Pay the toll. And remember—Gordie didn’t take crap, and neither do we.

The governors who are pleading with Canadians to visit have no control over the border and the gestapo agents patrolling it. They have no chance of convincing me to even approach it.

Canada 🇨🇦 does not give in to bullying. I’m glad to hear how you really feel about your neighbours to the great North. We stand for democracy. We are not liars or bigots. We are a sovereign nation. So, just let us be and we will not bother you. We are just fine on our own. ARE YOU?

Are these American idiots for real? If these comments weren't so utterly stupid, they would be laughable!

It just goes to show you that a significant portion of the American public are not only ignorant, they are severely 'un' or 'under' educated.

I can't believe these morons actually made it past grade 5, much less the positions they currently occupy!

I actually pity these people because history will paint them with the brush of an ignoramus which they so richly deserve!

What an embarrassment! What a bunch of liars! What a bunch of losers!

Not to be rude but I wouldn't feel safe in your country right now! My parents used to own a motel in Ft. Lauderdale and I would love to come back for a look see, but not until the MAGA maggots are out of power.

No offense intended to all the "good" folks down south but it'll be a long time before I return.

American exceptionalism is a heady drug that afflicts not just US citizens but many Canadians as well. Many Canadians have deluded themselves in thinking America is our close friend and ally and failed to recognize that is a great power that has interests that clash with our own and that they have the ability to turn on us when it suits them. All it takes a lawless gangster to throw it all in motion.

What is the best way to greet people on Canada Day?

Do we say, " Happy Canada Day," or "Elbow Up," or "F**k Trump," or a combination of all three?

Trump has no intention of negotiating with Canada. In his mind, he is going to destroy our economy so that are forced to join the USA; in my darkest moments, I believe that he is grooming his base to believe Canada poses a clear and present danger to the USA so that he has an excuse to invade. They'll believe anything. But what kind of PR campaign can / should Canada mount to point out these lies?

Expand full comment
Peter's avatar

Exactly. There needs to be a very strong PR campaign against all these lies and rhetoric otherwise our economy, democracy and safety will slowly be crushed.

My wife- all four of her grandparents were Quebecois- and I love Canada and almost moved there years ago except for a family necessity. We are embarressed by MAGA and enraged that Trump would treat such a close ally so miserably. I must offer some reassurance to you, though. I honestly feel that an American attack on Canada would begin the unravelling of the US. A huge majority of Americans would be outraged, and there may well be significant opposition, not all of it peaceful. Most importantly, a fairly large part of the US military would have issues with it, and I would be surprised if unit integrity could be adequately maintained for a long period. I have some reserve experience in the States, and know people with far more recent service than myself, and a significant number of enlisted and tactical level officers would have issues with such orders. And do you think our Guard and reserve units would respond in a cohesive fashion? NO, they wouldn't. An invasion would be a big problem for Canada, but a Bigger problem for us. I believe it would initiate our breakup. That would mean a whole new set of problems for Canada, though, just as it would for us.

Steven, thank you for taking the time to write words of encouragement. We worry about Canada but can hardly imagine how you must be feeling. There have been massive protests, and so far, there doesn't seem to be anyone in the opposition providing leadership - a vision, a plan -- to unite and take advantage of the momentum of outrage. Canadian hearts and hopes are with you.

Thank You. We just returned from a friend's house filled with good food and conversation, and we were saying the same things. We have terrible opposition leadership here, and most of us are yearning for good leaders and a well-organized movement to coalesce because many of us have important things to contribute. And we know so many people- the vast majority we speak with- who hate it here. Our system sucks, we never should have left the Crown.

We do notice one surprising thing among many of the college aged kids here, and that is their visceral hatred of the regime. We've noticed a cold anger, a 'Let's tear the whole thing down' or a "Luigi was right in killing the United Health executive' advocacy, with the young adults saying it's too late to save the system. We don't know where this headed, although some of us suspect there are some surprises ahead.

No plan survives contact, whether it's a military operation or Trump's idiot policies. We shall see. There will always be Canada. I am less sure that there will always be a USA in its current form. Cheers/Elbows up, Canada.

There are a lot of things Trump and his administration have done that one would think would be the unravelling of the US and would outrage Americans, things that have triggered shows of opposition, none seemingly significant enough to slow or prevent the implementation of fascist authoritarianism. Given that it is highly unlikely that Trump will peacefully relinquish power or maybe even call another election, what lies ahead for America?

I agree with you 1000% Charlie! BTW did you happen to catch the conversation US Ambassador Peter Hoekstra had today on Power & Politics? If not, it's certainly worth a watch. He had a very charming, smiling (ie., smarmy) way of talking totally condescending about our country - calling Canada being a 51st state of the US as a 'term of endearment'. I thought I would puke! Luckily Catherine Cullen handled him very well in the short time block. Have a wonderful Canada Day!

Our entire family has no intension of ever crossing the border to America again. They are lawless, hateful and discriminating people. And you are right Charlie Angus, if they were true neighbour's, they would not be just worried about the money, they would be fighting to get their laws back, their democracy back, their love back, their life back and that is not happening. Very scary but, we as Canadians will fight and never give in!!

T Allen - may those 70% of the US population speak up and speak out against the deliberate demonizing of Canada by the MAGA fascists. It is so very easy to stir people up to a state of frenzied hatred where they can direct their own personal sense of failures, frustrations and insecurities. Watching the narrative that Kristi Noem, Kash Patel and Cruz and of course Trump himself build against Canada as the enemy and the threat to America is Justifying an Invasion 101.

Sorry about these guys. They're a little too worked up.

It is unfortunate that people tend to lump groups of people together and assume they're all the same. It's like saying that all Jews are evil because Netanyahu is evil. It's a flawed way of thinking that causes a lot of unnecessary suffering.

I know, trust me. Most of us are furious too. Just hope they understand to focus on the true problem which is the current US Government and mainstream media that are misleading people. No excuse for our MAGAts. Keep up the good work of busting our economy because it is having the desired effect! :-)

How kind of you to say! Sadly, Trump is busting up your whole country. Whatever Canadians do is a drop in the bucket. It's really the red states that need to be hurt by his policies. I think that might be happening already.

This may be premature to ask, but what about post-Trump? Any plans for mending US democracy once he's finally gone? (Praying that it's sooner rather than later.)
