Reading this from Japan, and I felt a strange familiarity — a different country, but the same quiet structures collapsing.

Your call for resistance reminded me of what silence and pressure do to a society over time.

I wrote about it from our side of the world:

Thanks for holding the line up north. Let’s keep the lights on — wherever we are.

I look at a number of news which includes CBC & CTV news channels. The American based sources don’t have a clear grasp of the Canadian point of view. I’ve never voted Liberal while Trudeau was their leader but will probably vote for Carney. I haven’t voted for the Conservatives since they lost to the Liberals in 2015. I don’t like how far to the right they have moved and especially don’t like how Poilievre leads the party.

Charlie is a constant source of inspiration to Canadians. His message is our message!

im attaching an open letter from Neil Young to Mark Carney, not to compete with Charlie but to compliment him.

An Open Letter to Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney from Neil Young

4-14-25

Dear Mr. Carney…

I am writing because I want to tell you how much I appreciate and support what you are trying to do for our great country, Canada.

Although I have lived in the United States for most of my life, and recently became a citizen of the USA, I am a Canadian and always will be. Now a dual citizen, I was born in Toronto, lived in the small town of Omemee, Ontario, endured polio when I was so young, I hardly understood what was happening to me and worried every day that I was going to die. It’s a miracle I survived and my childhood continued. My parents were wonderful. They let me have chickens. They let me play my guitar. Our dinner conversations covered everything from world issues, to sports, to stuff that was just plain interesting. But life isn’t perfect and our family split up. That’s when I moved to Winnipeg with my mom and the course of my life became clear. I became a musician and played at high schools and community clubs throughout the wonderful province of Manitoba.

Like you, I’ve met a lot of people in my career, from many walks of life, some who were wonderful, a great help to me, and some who were just there for a while. At this stage of my life, I am thankful to all of them who showed up and joined me on my journey. And…. I am so grateful to have had the luxury of a spotlight to bring attention to important causes and try to lead the charge through my music for rights and fairness on behalf of the people. It was urgent for us all to speak truth to power.

So now, here we are again. Canada is facing threats to its very existence, incredibly from people we thought were our friends. They want our resources, they want our land, they want our fisheries, they want our water, they want our Arctic, maybe they want our souls. I know the US president could use a soul.

It takes more than bravado to fight this kind of a threat. It takes brains, deep economic knowledge of how the world works, it takes strong, intelligent strategies, and the ability to recognize and seize opportunities both at home and on the world stage, opportunities that can bring a new level of prosperity and safety to people…..people who right now may be paralyzed with fear as they look to the future of Canada and the world.

Mr. Carney, I believe you are the person to do it. I believe you are the person our country needs to lead us through this crazy situation and bring us out the other side as a stronger, smarter, more resilient Canada, our core values of caring and fairness and generosity intact, along with our souls. Without a doubt, you’ve got the chops to get it done. And man, you have got the guts to take it on.

It's a heavy lift for sure, Mr. Carney. But I, for one, am with you all the way.

PEACE,

…Neil Young

We WILL wind up like the US, definitely entering into dictatorship if our freaking media don’t step up, I can see it on my local news. The level of not reporting the whole story, ignoring the protests and rally’s, get on it !!!! I’ve taken to emailing them daily, we need to start protests at news outlets as well.

I never thought I’d see a corporate or even political influence in Canadian media outlets (specifically, television news casts). A good example of this is the firing of Rachel Gilmore and her live fact checking. PP (like his mentor T. Rump) doesn’t think it’s fair, so he goes crying to the corporate ownership FFS!!

I too contacted CTV to protest the cowardice of firing Rachel Gilmore and axing...not a tax, but her much-needed spot. Not a peep back. More cowardice.

I have already left one comment but came back to point out that executive director Michael Cormier must be made to answer.

Claiming ignorance is not a defence.

He cannot get off that lightly.

This man needs to be fired from his position.

Seems relevant here that one company, Postmedia, owns the majority of major Canadian newspapers and a whole lot of small ones as well, and it in turn is owned by an American hedge fund with strong ties to the Republican party. I think we need some serious laws banning American ownership of Canadian media and breaking up media conglomerates to avoid a situation where the media speaks with one voice and that is the voice, more disguised or less so, of American fascists.

And if that results in a situation where a lot of newspapers can't survive in our internet age, fine, subsidize 'em. Let's face it, lots of people want to read the news, but there are so many sources and nobody wants to pay for them, so how about a subsidy per page view to Canadian-owned, Canadian-based news sources?

I have also questioned why the right wing propagandists were allowed into the scrum.

That was very disturbing.

I have also witnessed the capitulation of CTV to Pierier.

I have also been angered watching CBC act like they don’t know what’s going on and not calling out maga.

There is a time to cover both sides of the argument but I think it’s absolutely clear that one side is totally untrustworthy.

I worry about the right wing bullshit becoming normalized.

That is what needs to STOP.

I expect more from the CBC.

Anyone with half a brain knows what Rebel Media is! Where has Cormier been for the last few years, under a rock? Sorry, Mr. Cormier, wilful ignorance doesn’t cut it!

Things are so bad with traditional media that I long ago cut off (US-owned Postmedia) print publications and stopped watching local and national TV news. I still listen to CBC radio. But why pay for cable that I'm not watching?

These outlets have done it to themselves. They've lost touch with the new reality on our doorstep and they're too deep in the quicksand to get out.

"Executive Director Michel Cormier later admitted that he didn't know Rebel News was signed up as a third-party 'advocacy' group attempting to influence the election."

Has this guy been living under a rock? Rebel News has nothing to do with "news" and everything to do with causing mischief to help the extreme right fracture Canada. Legitimizing Rebel News in this way is one more wound to Canadian democracy.

I checked out a few videos on MeidasTouch. I'm glad they're doing it (sort of restores my faith in the American people) but I couldn't handle getting their hourly dose of rage. I'm trying Stoic determination.

I find you have to pick and choose which video of theirs you watch, and even then I often fast forward to the better bits. They run a bit long, IMHO. I admire their passion but would appreciate some brevity!
