May I recommend as an alternative to bourbon a good Scots single malted whisky?
I’m particularly partial to the Aberlour. It is peaty, but not overly so, has the fragrant terroire of the Spey valley, has been matured in sherry casks and has a slight liqueur finish on the tongue.
No, I don’t work for them but am an enthusiast about their product.
I say this from the bottom of my American heart — Thank you, Canada! Keep your boycott going and growing till Trump and all his minions scream for mercy.
Thanks for all that you do Charlie! Please help promote the GENERAL CONSUMER STRIKE. We need to hold the American economy hostage until basic demands are met.
1) The president must respect the rule of law
2) The president must acknowledge free speech and the power of the Judiciary
If we don't spend, the economy slows...and more people don't spend.
Voters care about $$$s.

Right now, Trump is defying the Judiciary and flirting with a constitutional crisis. But, we are not powerless....we have the power of the purse.
We regularly boycott countries that will not respect our values. America has become one of those countries...threatening our neighbor's sovereignty, extorting from those under attack, showing no respect for the rule of law or basic civil rights. Engage in this potent legal form of protest.
Will this hurt everyone? Yes. Trump has declared war on our legal system and constitution. War hurts.
HOW WILL WE SURVIVE AN ECONOMIC SLOWDOWN?
--Give what you can to neighbors and food banks
--Join the gift economy through local sites like Buy Nothing and Nextdoor.
--Ask neighbors and friends for what you need.
Please post, share, spread the word any way you can and stop the shredding of our Democracy.
Thanks, stay strong and keep fighting. We are in this together.
I've always enjoyed your literature as a fellow Canadian writer. This is a very articulate and incisive article about how the behaviour of the people can dramatically turn the tides of Capitalism.
Boycotts are effective worldwide. There are a plethora of shops, gyms, hotels, businesses etc in most countries. Moreover, the same array of options exists online. If you cease your investment and time with a specific company, and publicize this termination of business, it will have a powerful effect on society and the economy long-term.
Bravo, Charlie@ You preach beautifully. There is great power in showing people how good, how right, how true they are. They can trust themselves and one another.in the end the good guys win. If they haven't won yet, it's not the end.
My advice to Canadians and all other sane people: boycott and don’t stop. Make the boycotts permanent. The winners will be small and local business, the losers will be oligarchs and other miscreants. Let’s stop worshipping scale, convenience and low prices. There’s far more to life than Amazon Prime and free shipping. It was fun for a while. Everything has its moment. Let’s end their moment.
It has been evident for quite some time that Trump’s end game is a desire to annex Canada. His blatant support for Putin’s empire building efforts in Ukraine and beyond, demonstrates the ignoble state of his mind.
Canada’s vast natural resources and massive land mass, and its reliance on its former benevolent big brother America for defence, makes Canadian annexation the low hanging fruit of nation conquering, in Trump’s eyes. His recent hyping of Gaza as a Trumpian Riviera, with total disregard for its devastated population, also speaks to his villainous imperialistic aspirations of greed.
If the current US President and his sycophantic regime are not eradicated at its roots, I fully believe, martial law in America and a subsequent invasion of Canada are imminent.
Trump isn’t being blackmailed by Putin for his acquiescence. He has been a willing lackey since the 1980s, and is now Russia’s enthusiastic partner in crimes against humanity.
Putin is in cahoots with China and North Korea, and since Trump is aligning himself and America, with that axis of the truly evil, there can be little doubt about their desired end game. If left unchecked, the foreseeable, very near future, will result in a three empire collaboration of world domination. The new map of totalitarian domination will spawn The United States of North America, The Russian Federation of Europe and the Chinese Dynasty of Asia. A despicable New World Order, which may well portend the biblical depiction of Revelations. (For a little levity, perhaps Trump is really only after our $3 a dozen eggs.)
Oh yes, we did this the first time around but even more so now. Nobody needed to tell me how to be a Canadian. It is buy Canadian as much as possible. If not, then buy Mexico, buy Europe, buy UK, buy South America (Peruvian grapes, who knew?, Malbec from Argentina or Chile). Let’s get new and better trading partners. Let’s also not forget Asia, like South Korea, Japan…
Thank you Charlie. As an American I am grateful to the International community of democracies, and Canada in particular for finding ways to create the cracks that will bring this administration to its knees. We Americans are going through some things.
But I encourage you to separate the Administration from the citizenry. Sentences like "But let’s be honest: at this point in our shared history, we are no longer friends," blurs the line. I see the Canadians as the true friend who takes the keys from their friend when they have had too much to drink.
We have alot of problems in our country, and we haven't shown the spine required... yet. You can help us with our spine, you can show us how to boycott effectively, but please... keep a clear line between your friends, the American people, and the Trump Administration.
I know, I know, over 70 million voters voted for Trump 2.0. But over 70 million also voted against him. And over 90 million qualified citizens didn't vote. We have a lot of relearning to do about what makes for a civic society. But we are fighting billionaires, and a corrupt Supreme Court, and a hate filled divisive leader... we need true friends. Please remember that.

“As I have said before, the MAGA crowd might love chaos, but capitalism doesn’t.” Yes, boycotts work.
Thank you & keep going!
