You are exactly right, Charlie. It is history repeating itself. I don't believe that Trump got to this on his own. He seems to be a bear of little brain, but he has no moral compass, and is letting Musk and his other goons lead him. Perhaps he is in debt to Putin and the members of his "cabinet".
Winning the "fight" will not be violent at all, but instead will consist of small, consistent, generous acts of goodwill - that will be the resistance, the sand in the gears of fascism, that will win the day.
The difference between Hitler s and Trump's first 30 days is that Trump hit the ground with an MCU superhero thud and began flinging executive orders like thunderbolts. Trump felt secure enough in his power that he needed no cooling off before launching his salvos at the inspectors generals and unleashing the DOGE bags on usaid, GSA, OPM, DOD, IRS, NIH, all this by February 21st, 2025.
Then of course there have been the indiscriminate firings of personnel from agencies as diverse as the Forest Service, the Small Business Administration, the Centers for Disease Control, the Food and Drug Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, Medicare & Medicaid, the Internal Revenue Service, the Vetrans' Administration and, Environmental Protection Agency and, the Office of Personnel Management.
Yesterday (Friday, February 21st, 2025) On his first full day on the job, the new director of the FBI cash app Patel has told thousands of FBI agents stationed in the Washington DC office that they were to report to a facility in Virginia. Other agents have been told that they will be reassigned from the Washington office to other field offices.
It is heartening that the boy caught, which began in Canada is now gaining traction elsewhere in the world. Canadians however, need to remain vigilant. There are reports making the rounds that one grocery store has put tags identifying their store brand products as Canadian. That sounds like a really positive move, doesn't it? However, on further expect inspection, it was discovered that these products weren't produced in Canada or made with Canadian materials. Please double check when you see a maple leaf on a shelf tag, double check to make sure that the store isn't red washing. We are in this individually. We can do good but we have to be responsible because big business is not necessarily our friend. Nor was it in 1930s Germany.
In Germany in the 1930s companies like crip, Hugo Boss. Hugo Boss, that makes suits, VW, Fanta which is now a Coca-Cola product, BMW, Siemens, IBM, IG furban, bear, thiessen old supported the Nazis; many of these countries during the war use labor from the death camps to help manufacture their products. We've already seen companies in 2025, bend the knee to the new regime in Washington in one way or another. Companies like Amazon, Target, Home Depot, Google, Meta, McDonald's, Goldman Sachs, Walmart, Ford, Lowe's, Harley-Davidson, Jack Daniels, John Deere and Tractor Supply. We have to remember that corporate interests are all about shareholder value, not the consumer.
We are all in this alone, but take heart, because we are in this alone together.
After E. Jean Carroll testified in court in the rape (not the defamation) trial against Trump, she posted for all to see, “He’s nothing.” The jury found him guilty , and she won an $80+ million judgement against him.
My only critique is that Hilter didn't start out as "a murderous psychopath," but when his lies were challenged and exposed he had to destroy anything that challenged his lies, to the point of genocide. Evil creeps up on you.
Great piece, Charlie! The German experience fits nicely as a parallel!! Trump isn’t interested in governing. He’s interested in the perks of power not the work of governing. His expertise is grifting and he has an insatiable appetite. That may be the route to his downfall. His greed. The Peter Thiel’s of the world, with their vast resources are waiting for his downfall. The Vance’s of the world in the long term may be the most danger to the long term decline of US democracy.
“Across the continent and around the world, there are people who see this tide of shitty vindictiveness for what it is.”
And only Charlie tells it like it is, like that, clear-eyed and straight shooting. So to speak. It’s beyond ironic that the closest I have seen to someone to rally behind and keep going is a soft but well-spoken Canadian MP. I have to keep reminding myself that this time we’re the bad guys, big if not only difference is most of the world now understands that which half of America might not ever realize.
Charlie, thanks for all you do!!!. I'm a senior who is boycotting all things USA and trying to keep Pierre Polievre out of power. Please give us a list of additional actions we can take to stop the insanity. Thank you!!!
Talk to USAID people who have been abandoned at overseas posts, to people who have been allowed to resign then fired then re-hired. If all the slashing isn't chaos...
The Heritage Foundation finally found a nice mouth-piece/puppet in Trump. He truly believes he's making all the decisions. That's what narcists do. Add to that a virulent streak of cruelty and here we are. Thinking we can a) last two years and b) we'll regain power in two years is delusional and self-destructive. We're in a blitzkrieg. Act now. and stock your pantry.
When people ask this question I challenge them to read about the "Madres de la Plaza". In the late 1970's and early 80's, a brutal regime in Argentina butchered its own people, much like Chile and Brazil did. Young men and women students and their colleagues who criticized the regime were kidnapped, tortured and thrown out of helicopters into the Atlantic ocean, never to be seen again. But their Madres and Abuelas (mothers and grandmothers) undertook silent protests EVERY DAY in the main square of Buenos Aires, holding photos of their missing children, and drew constant media attention to the horrors unfolding. It was ultimately too embarrassing for the junta, because they could not just go in and shoot all these older women without drawing worldwide condemnation and loss of support from the democracies that had been looking the other way. This Madres were an indispensable tool for overcoming the regime. FIND YOUR INNER MADRE!
It is so hard to make people listen and wake up. Really hard. So I try to do what I can.
A keen awareness and good assessment and we must all act.

Spot on, Charlie! We cannot wait as you say.... OPPOSE NOW! We cannot let this crime spree fester.

I’ve been afraid of just such a fire or something since day one. Thank you for framing it so directly.
How alone are we?

WHAT CAN WE DO?

Excellent reminders. Trump has already gone too far. No excuses, it’s time to fight back.
