They aren't allowed to have their phone or to make phone calls. They are only allowed visits from their lawyer but even those are restricted in number.
Has Guantanamo been reopened? Trump talked about it as their Texas camp overflowed with detainees? If it has been used to house detainees that makes 2 concentration camp style prisons.

I hear American commentators decry the present situation and harken to the inevitable day when Trump’s term in office is over. What? But a return to orderly democratic rule will not be the likely scenario considering the damage he has done to government institutions this last month.
In Canada, there’s a similar belief by some very well educated, young professionals whom I know. “It’s no point in worrying about Trump. After-all, he wasn’t able to do too much damage in his last Presidency.” And of course there is the refrain, “Luckily, it can’t happen here.”
Perhaps one has to have listened to the war stories from Ukrainian refugees or to be old enough to have relatives who fought in WW2 to imagine the horror of it all. Perhaps the potential horrors are just too unimaginable.
In this connection it may be worth mentioning that on Friday night, Trump fired the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff of the military. That is, the top guy of the US military. He ALSO fired all the senior Judge Advocates General of all three military branches. Those are the people who, for instance, decide what is and isn't a legal order. So if you're planning to give some illegal orders, those are the ones you want out of the way.

My parents both fought the nazis and many of their friends had escaped Europe before the war. As a child, it was difficult to understand why more did not leave when they had a chance. Now I understand why. My parents’ German friends described how people thought it would “just blow over” or - he’s “too extreme to be taken seriously”. Always ahead of the curve, I decided to move to Canada when I saw the far right was not going away, and the elected elites were quietly siphoning off public wealth and power.
On January 6, 2021 I was at work as a family doctor in a rural clinic, desperately listening to the news between each patient. I expected Trump to declare an “emergency” and remain in power by force (apparently that was the original plan). Although I was relieved after that day, the fact that he wasn’t prosecuted was the first hint that the system was not working for the people.
The silver linings I see in the current US situation are that most Americans do not support him, including military members; the worsening economic situation may mean that his financial backers get cold feet; and the fact that many MAGAs have serious social dysfunctions that may hamper attempts to get anything done (think “spiders in a jar”). Hopefully, Canadians will see this for what it is and build other alliances and work to strengthen our own democracy. Adopting electoral reforms that give voice to smaller parties and emphasize cooperation (like proportional representation) would be a start.
